Sooo since this came up. Been wondering. Someone like me who likes to root and flash custom roms on her galaxy. How would that work with the App? Would I have to de-attach it each time before I flash?

I know my FFXI one is starting to show signs of slowing down. I should just change it over to my XIV 1.0 key which I kept safe. Just been curious if I wanna switch to smart phone way.

When people are pissed, they write reviews to get it off their chest. When people are happy, they don't nearly as often.

I have a pychical one from 11. No issues ever (except the couch eating it once). I'll change it out to the 14 1.0 one sometime soon I'm sure.

I was going to get it as well, but the reviews scared me off

"It keeps forgetting my account and i need to contact customer support" seems to be the majority of them

I've had the one time password token on my android phone for years now and I've never had a single issue. I have seen a few people complaining about the app deleting their information or not working but speaking from experience I have had zero issues with it. It hasn't messed up even with my phone moving from Android 5.0 all the way to 7.0 over the years.

If you get it, make sure you mark down your emergency removal password and you have nothing to worry about! It's simple and easy to use and it adds an extra layer of protection to your account.

Just to reiterate, if you go with the app MAKE SURE you write down the recovery code.

There is also the physical version of the one time password token but I am not sure if that is going to be reliable just going by the app reviews. I could be wrong, and I would not mind having to pay for it.

I was wondering if anyone here could share some of their experiences with these two forms of one-time passwords and give me some advice on if I should use one of the two or if I would be fine without it. Please and thank you!
The iOS app still works for me. Mind you the OS on my iPad3 no longer updates, so if I want to transfer the software token to my phone, the phone auto-updates the OS, and thus the software token can be broken arbitrarily from that.

This is basically the "broken" problem the software token has, if the device updates, and you didn't follow the instructions provided, it stops working. I've never actually encountered this situation but that is why there is an emergency removal code. How many of y'all actually keep that around? Probably not many, and by the time the device updates, thus requiring using it, you've probably misplaced it.

Also of a side note on software tokens, there are people who have used Android emulators for this, thus defeating the purpose of having a software token. It would be better to have a physical token than run an android emulator.

I've never had an issue with the app on my Android before, and my phone is such a piece of crap that the internet browser crashes about 75% of the time, and I occasionally have to restart it because the touch screen won't register if the wrong apps try to be activated at the same time. The Software Token App is pretty much the only one on my phone that actually consistently works as intended....

The app is fine, the problem is usually the OS on your device that will break it.

I used the phone app for 2 years. No issues ever until Apple did an update on my phone. There wasn't a lot of press put out about the updates effect on the app, but there was an issue of the app breaking when you updated your phone software ( but SE was FULLY aware of this issue ). This rendered the app useless for more than a few weeks. Because of it I was locked out of my account over a holiday weekend ( due to SEs sub par tech support & customer service. They are only open monday-friday like 9-5 PST. It might be earlier & later respectively but you get the idea ). This led to massive frustration on my part as someone who works everyday of the week and had to take time off to get my account unlocked.

After this experience I completely removed my one-time password in association with the application. That same day I removed it and ordered the hard keychain one-time password. ( after getting through to customer service after 4 days of waiting to even be able to call. This was over Christmas I believe hence they were not open, understandably ).

I've been using the one-time password token for a year, no battery issues. I have friends who are legacy that have been using it for 3-4 years no issues. It is well worth the 10 dollars in my opinion to avoid any hassle with having to deal with SE's insanely bad customer service.

If you insist on going with the app, be sure to WRITE DOWN ( with pen and paper ) the recovery code and put it somewhere safe. I also recommend a screenshot, or putting it on your PC, have it in 2 places at least. This will also help you avoid having to deal with customer service if it ever breaks. I had lost mine as I had never had to use it in those 2 years.

I guess the answer to that is a definitive "maybe".
Honestly I'd just see what happens, if it stops working or gives you invalid codes the process of unattaching it with the recovery code (DO keep readily accessible but secure copies of that) is really painless and you can add a new software token right away.

    On general feedback:
While I don't use a keyfob for FFXIV I use similar tokens for other games and only had an issue there once (the battery dying after YEARS, I've since switched to a software token for that game).
I use software tokens for FFXIV and other games, no issues there either.
I was gone from FFXIV for two years, during that time one of the software updates for my device seems to have simply deleted the SQEX token. Removing the token with the recovery code was quick and easy, as was reattaching the newly downloaded app.

I generally use 2FA where available and honestly the only issues I ever had were with systems that send you a code by email.
Codes getting eaten by spamfilters or their mail delivery clogging up and sending codes hours late when they're valid for 15 minutes isn't fun.

The apps great ! works wonders for me, I had the physical token but I had that on me way less than I did my phone so the phone was easier to use for the one time password. Highly suggest it, makes it easier to play on different consoles, and provides valuable extra security.
