Looking for Input on SQUARE ENIX Software Token App

Hello, I have been wanting to use the one-time password setup, but after reading some reviews on the app, I have read many reviews saying that the app is broken. It forgets that it is connected to your account, updates seem to make the app reset its data, and you have to constantly use emergency removal passwords.

There is also the physical version of the one time password token but I am not sure if that is going to be reliable just going by the app reviews. I could be wrong, and I would not mind having to pay for it.

I was wondering if anyone here could share some of their experiences with these two forms of one-time passwords and give me some advice on if I should use one of the two or if I would be fine without it. Please and thank you!

I bought my physical token when it was released for FFXI: never got any problem with it but a few years ago, the battery seemed weak so I installed the Android app.

I never had any problem with the app, even when updating my OS. However, I de-attached, re-attached the app several times (phone problems, phone changes) and it was always easy and smooth.

My wife has the ARR CE physical token: no issue either with this one.

Same here, never had any issues. The software app gives you a security password which you can use to remove the app if there would ever be any issues (lost your phone or whatever). As long as you have this written down (preferably in 2 different places, one of them which isn't digital), you should be fine. And when you remove the token app, you can just reactivate it again whenever. I don't think there's any imaginable reason not to use it.

I am using the app, and it works fine. But it refuses to let me register multiple apps to the same account. In as, ipad/iphone

I'm still using my 1.0 CE token from 2009, no issues with it yet. If it goes out, I have the 2.0 CE token lying around I can connect lol.

I had no problems at all using the app with a Samsung phone, but as soon as I switched to a Nexus 6P I started having the issues you mentioned.

I'd suggest to try the app first (take a screenshot of whatever codes you need to eventually remove it from your account if it breaks). In my experience it only took a day at most to break, so if you're able to go a week you're probably good. If it does break, get the physical token.

Beyond the added cost, a physical token can't be reused if you decide to apply it and then remove it to try the app (you'll have to repurchase), so consider the physical token as a reliable last resort.

I have physical tokens from a couple different game CEs (2 for XIV 1.0 and 2.0) but I eventually just switched to the software version.
Pros:
1) If I ever need to log in to my account, I typically have my phone around, not so much with the physical token.
2) If I lose or break my phone, finding it or replacing the app is fairly easy (provided you kept you recovery code!).
3) If my phone battery dies I can just put it on a charger, can't charge the physical token.

Cons:
1) The likelyhood of losing my phone versus a token that I keep in or on my desk is higher, but only since I'm not taking the token out of my house.
2) If you lose your recovery code and don't have access to the App, the physical token has a serial code attached you can use to recover your account that you don't have with the app.
