    2nd Job Question

I'm sure I'm missing something, but haven't found an answer.....

While I did the 15 levels on Lancer to go from Pugilist to Monk, I was thinking I'd also add Rogue to the character as well. The catch is, when I equip my dagger, and go rogue, I don't see, or have any quests. When I head out into the world, I only see the "!" for quests that would be of the same level or thereabouts as my Monk.

Am I missing something? Are quests (not main story) repeatable on different jobs, or is it simply a matter of grinding then? You only get quests once?

    Yeah...dumb question...I know....sorry in advance!

No, quests (apart from Beast Tribes - higher levels, once a day) are one-time only. Once they're done, that's that on that character. For leveling, you'd have to look at dungeons/FATEs/Palace of the Dead/Leves and such instead.

Did you look in La Noscea area? Since you previously leveled mainly in the Black Shroud for Lancer and Thanalan for Pugilist you might find something there.

The vast majority of quests in the game are once-per-character. For this reason many people focus as much on the main story quests as possible to level up their first class, leaving more quests available for later classes. Of course, eventually these all run out. Thats when PotD, dungeons, roulettes, and Fates are really useful. With that said, the first time completion bonus on guildhests is actually available for each class. Every class also gets its own version of the hunting log. And the challenge log is repeatable weekly, giving you more replenishing exp bonuses to spread around. The few quests that are repeatable have a different icon so you can tell. Heres an example beast tribe quest you can repeat daily.

The most effective way to level your 2nd classes is to do your daily leveling roulette combined with the highest dungeon available to you and / or Palace of the Dead. You should also do your class hunting log (level 1-50) and your hunts (level 50+). You can add side quests, guildhests, FATEs and guildleves. Also remember your weekly challenge log for bonus exp!

Free Company exp buff and food will also boost your EXP, as does the novice ring (up to certain level), so don't forget those either!

Info I wish I had know sooner! (Not that I regret it, but I'd have left a clearer path to 15 or so.)

Makes total sense, and I should have realized. Let me tie one other question on to that, if that's okay?

I've read some guides for PotD, and I other than an hour messing around with it a few nights ago, have not jumped in all. What I don't understand, is how progress there ties into my "main" level, as in how am I gaining XP? Is it a fixed %, or is it based on the floors that you are doing? I'll take all the other suggestions, and thank you all for them. I guess since I skipped PoTD while doing the first job leveling, I wanted to make sure I do it on the 2nd job (especially if it helps me get to the 15-20 area, so I can again queue for dungeons, and play with some friends who are in that level area as well.) Thanks again!

I'll leave that link here, since it's so much to explain, might be easier to read up on it.

But in short, if you're going in as a level 60 class, upon finishing 10 floors, you'll receive tomes and gil. If you're going in as a class/job that's under that threshold (1-59 outside of the dungeon in "real" game world), you'll be rewarded exp and gil. That said, the exp vary by floors and the boss levels (40-50 as well as 90-100) after successfully defeating that last boss will yield in a higher reward then the other floors, as well as 100% gain of your aether armor and weapon.

You'll gain an experience bonus after completion as well, if your first character is higher level then your the character you're running it with, in most cases the lower floors will give you around 1-3 levels, depending on your starting level and the higher floors will yield around 1-2 levels depending on your starting level etc.

Note that your level inside of the palace of the dead will always be higher, but doesn't reflect the in game character when outside the palace, making it easier for newer players and veterans alike, to experience the class/job they picked at level 60 (exception the job unlocked skills), to see if they like a job or not before leveling it. Also great for getting cross class skills before 4.0. With the expansion that will change anyways. However it's as of current the quickest leveling method when it comes to alts or 2nd, 3rd jobs etc. Compared of doing hunting log, dungeons, fates and side quests. It does not eliminate the good exp boost you're getting from daily roulette's, so even if you're picking this method for leveling, don't forget to do your roulette's as well.

For leveling purposes you can ignore the floors 100+, since you can't enter those without a pre made party or solo, duty finder for that won't work since it has specific requirements. There's a couple of methods that you could be doing, let me list some of them.

    1) run floor 1-10, reset, repeat (This is a good method if you want to solo it at lower level or don't feel playing with others, this run will take about 10-15 minutes - 5-8 minutes with a matched party aka DF)
    Or
    2) start at 1-10 and work your way up to 40-50, as explained above the last boss will give heaps of exp at the end and opens the possibility to run the floors 51+ but it takes a bit to get through it, depending on your group when using DF, you might be looking at 2-4 hours, since it's troll heaven most of the times or people trying to get all chests in there.
    Or
    3) run 50-60 over and over, this floor can be speed run and most people do that, since it gives more exp then the first floors but are mostly smaller rooms with less enemies. The chance of getting silver chests are higher as well, however if speed run is going to happen, those are mostly ignored. Make sure if you're planning on doing that method that your aether pool is at least 40+, so you're not a burden to your party, but higher would be even better and recommended.

You only have to do a full run once, that will unlock the possibility later on after finishing the quest, that when resetting your progress, you'll be able to chose to pick up right at floor 51 without having to do a full run of 1-50 first.

The moment you reach 90/90 on your aether pool you can exchange that for an outside weapon at level 60 ilvl 255, but it will reset the palace of the dead weapon while being inside, so my recommendation, get it to 99/99 that's the max, that gives you the possibility to even solo the 51+ floor in a timely manner without having to go with a group. Also makes it easier if you're planning on leveling job 3/4/5 etc.

I hope i covered the basics if not please feel free to ask.

Now with that out of the way, if your goal is only to get to level 15/20 with your 2nd, 3rd job, which will take via potd around 2 hours (give or take - depending on groups or how fast you're solo etc), there are some other options as well, that in some cases are faster. I'll list them as well, so you won't get bored by running potd, and maybe it's a good alternative for you.

    1) at level 1 pick up the class quest that tells you to go kill couple mobs, look around in that city if you find any other quests that are level 1-5 that you might have not picked up prior, if so go ahead and collect them as well, if not go ahead and move to the area, you're supposed to kill the other mobs.

Now use some food, don't matter what you're using, npc's sell cheap stuff and it don't have to be the right stats, just make sure it says +3% exp at the bottom for 30 minutes. Start killing stuff but don't stop at the 5 or whatever the quest count is, keep going, while level 1-5 mobs don't give much exp, it's enough to get you to level 5 and that's where you want to be.

Open your hunting log, go through that, and stop at fates that are on the way (low level ones). Turn in your quest etc, and do that till level 10. At level 10, you can go to aleport or that little town before Swift something, I forgot lol, and do fates there either with your chocobo if you have one or jump on the train (not available on servers so, depending on population).

This scenario takes around 45 - 60 minutes.

    Or Old school,

    2) Find a friend that plays a healer or has one level'd, and not just any healer but either White Mage or Astro. While it does work with SCH, it is just slower and mostly doesn't work as great. Make sure that this healer is at least level 30, but level 50 would be better and I tell you in a second why.

Now party with that person, have that person buff you (protect/stone skin), then leave the group. Make sure your friend focus targets you, now go in a area that has level 8 mobs. For example down by summerford farm I believe it is, behind the bridge are some pirate looking mobs and some other little stuff. Gather all of them, and I mean all. Like imaging pulling the whole hill down to your friend, making sure you're attacking at least each of these mobs at least once. Your friend will have to keep you alive with casting regen on you, that makes all these mobs aggro on him, when everything is gathered, cast Holy (WHM) or whatever the Astro's aoe skill is.

Mobs will die within 3 seconds, giving you all the exp of them, if you have attacked them prior of the healer killing them. If not you're getting only the ones you hit. At level 10 move to a level 15 area, rinse repeat, and at level 12 move to an level 20+ but stay under level 30 areas. Doesn't work with level 40+ areas etc. This method is also not liable after level 15/20 since there are quicker ways.

Following all this, will take you around 25 minutes to get to level 15/20 if not even quicker, since your friend is doing all the work, and is the only way to "power" level a low level character as of current and of course not comparable of actual speed/power leveling in other mmo's.

    Luna,

I'll just say "wow" and "thank you" at the same time.

That slims it down, and I'll do the reading on it above and beyond. In all honesty, your response is awesome. I've spent too many years (early UO), and I've seen how often threads get vicious, or how I end up hating to ask what might be a dumb question when I can't find an answer with other games. The community here is pretty awesome, and from a new guy, who is just trying to figure out 4 years of content, in a week or so, the time you took to write that really is deeply appreciated. It's one the reasons I'm absolutely loving my time with the game, and odds on will be here for an awful long time, hopefully once I've "been there and done that", like everyone else, I'll remember to pay it forward, and offer the same help that everyone here has.

Seriously....everyone who has taken the time to respond...you are class acts! Thank you.

However I do like helping new players or players that return, but in most cases my posts are novel's and nobody got time for reading it. Or my english is lacking and people not understanding etc, whatever it is, it still doesn't stop me lol.

So no question is too stupid or dumb etc, just ask we all have started here somewhere, and with a lot of the changes made over the last years, lots of the guides out there are outdated. It might takes us a while to answer, but hey that's the fun of posting on the forums right? Keep us updated on your leveling progress. You might find some methods that work for you better than ours etc.
