Well they do get a penalty sooooo you could get a LS community like tanking or healer to get a replacement right away.
I think the mentor system really needs to be reworked heavily. Too many mentors aren't interested in teaching anything and are only in it for bonus so I reckon taking away the crown and extras and replacing it with some other system would be an improvement. Any change to be honest to try and keep only the mentory mentors would be good.
Personally I'd love to see some kind of mentor stall in cities where new characters can go to ask questions about the world, crafting and other stuff; you could be given a special bubble view around the stall as a mentor and that'd be the only perk. And then take away the crown but have it shown only in dungeons, and maybe only if new players click to let mentors in.
It varies by server. I'm a mentor and I'll let you know it's discouraging when people think a crown is an easy ticket. Here is why;
I.The majority of player have their own style and unless they have experience in life mentoring/supervising/a bit of common sense it makes it a great challenge.
II.Majority of players think they know everything and are close minded to advice or tips. They take suggestions as a negative comment and are too delicate. ( I blame society for wanting to give everyone a trophy for just trying )
III. People who take mentor status 60%-80% mainly do it for the bonus.
IV. Human nature dictates " Knowledge is power, and power drives a man Mad" Players depend more on visual aspects than actual experience. They don't want to admit fault or take responsibility for their actions being that in their own little world they are right everyone else is wrong.
Solution:
I.Your Stall is the sprout LS that you can join and ask help.
II. Communicate most Mentors will help and have patience if people actually ask for help.
III. Accept the fact that there are trolls out there.
IV. Make a connection on well known Mentors and have them as a friend or LS. If you can't find one at random ask for assistance.
Overall; Communication is the key. Players pay their monthly fee so are free to play however they like. Just like in life, people have a very weird concept of what common sense is and fail to take responsibility. You can only be an innocent bystander or help in your own way.
As a personal tip;
Find an LS or FC that has a decent reputation. (tank or healer community mainly)
Black list people who leave or are just trolls.
Party with people who you trust and rotate roles to get things done right away.
Be realistic, unlike FFXI this game is designed to allow players to solo play more, yet the world isn't perfect.
If you have experience and your explanations make sense speak up in a friendly way. You will notice that when things go south people can turn the tide by speaking up and taking a chance.

I agree with the other poster, really. I don't know if you hang out in Balmung's NN (I never saw you in there), but I ended up leaving in under a month after joining solely because I wanted to help people largely because some of the other mentors were just so obnoxious and it was rubbing off on me. NN was rife with petty personal drama and a couple of the mentors in particular tended to be somewhat combative and condescending to sprouts, flowers, and other mentors alike over even the most innocuous questions. Mentoring isn't just about game experience and is very much about temperament, but right now there's really nothing in place to even take a stab at ensuring mentors are not just knowledgeable, but patient and respectful.

Requirements to get mentor status:
・Complete at least one level 60 job quest as a tank, healer, and DPS.
・Complete 1,000 dungeons, raids, or trials.
・Receive 300 player commendations.
The mentor roulette includes guildhests, which have instructions on how to complete the duty at the start as well as intrusive text from an NPC throughout the duty. Does it look like mentors are meant to teach anything other than the basics?
I'd love if you had to earn a permit of sorts (single and multiple SSS targets for DPS to defeat in order to display some idea of how their job/role works, for example) but that would mean less mentors, which would mean less people to fill queues, which is the point of the roulette.
They'll just disconnect. As long as you aren't dumb enough to come out and say in chat that you'll be disconnecting, chances are nothing will happen. SE goes to great lengths to not ban people.

They'd already get a penalty if they left the duty, realistically what else do you want them to do? If they were actually there as part of mentor roulette (you don't know for sure) then maybe the leave option should be removed for that particular roulette, but I can see that being abused/people refusing to do whatever until kicked (but at least you could report for non-participation then).
At the end of the day though, leaving a duty someone doesn't like is something both mentors AND non-mentors do.
We do already have the novice network for general help though![]()
