Do you play alt characters, if so why?

I know some people have alts, and since you can do literally everything in this game with a single character, I was wondering what different reasons people have for playing them.

Like, do you run magic classes on a lalafell, and tanking classes on a roegadyn?

Or do you do DoW and DoM classes on your main and DoH, and DoL on your alt? And if so have the mailing restrictions been lifted, and if not how do you share between your main and alt?

Or any other reasons? I'm sure there's plenty.

Also if you are playing alts, are you playing different race/genders?

I've been playing since October 2013, but just barely started using alts this year for the same reason as quoted. I was once a highlander, then went elezen. I missed my highlander, but I didn't want to change my main, so I made an alt highlander. Then got curious and messed with the creator, and liked my new creations and made more alts including a hellsguard, midlander and another highlander. Thinking of making a lalafell only because I have a good name for him.

This, pretty much. I deal with mailing items between them via my partner. He likewise, uses my characters to mail stuff to his alts.

I really really wish we could just mail our alts stuff. Could potentially work around the whole needing to pay for additional retainers thing. Guess that's why we can't :<

I'm an rper. Of course all my characters are male Roes but sometimes some classes just don't fit a certain character.

It's hard to explain exactly but... sometimes I just want to start fresh. Maybe part of that is... I'm afraid of limiting myself and who I interact with, and starting a new character is a way to 'get out there' a bit?

My current character is... 3 years old now, I think? So I've been sticking with it, relatively. But it's not my 1.0 character or even my 2.0 character. And I've had some others on the side.

It can also be a good way to try out a certain race/appearance/etc without needing to be comfortable enough to fantasia my main to it.

Different races. Different classes look better as certain races. More retainers. More dailies/weeklies. More houses (though I only have one now, I let the others go).

I get bored easily, and am an indecisive person, so having an alt kind of solves that problem for me.

I enjoy crafting and doing it wholly, ie, not using the MB, so for me it was more a case of necessity as its really not possible to do all facets on a single char.(I know technically you could, via getting the mats each time just before construction, but that's just.....)
Trading across chars is done via a small section in the guild bank set aside for this very purpose.
If the crafting mats were handled like Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls and some other games, then I would probably only have a single char.
