No, don't see the point as you can be every class on 1 char.

No, you can't even mail stuff to your own alt for storage so... what's the point? =p
I just hit 60 with my alt last night, so now I have to worry about gearing her up and finishing HW MSQ D:
The reason that I personally play an alt though is because I enjoy being a potato...just not enough to be a potato-main.
I originally created my alt to be a mule. (For those unfamiliar with the term: in Final Fantasy XI Online we would make alts to be extra storage space, as you could mail most items to your own characters. Essentially they were used for what our retainers are. Extra storage and on the plus side they could be used to sell 7 more items on the auction house each). Then I found out you can't mail stuff to yourself in XIV.
So I just played through the whole of 2.0 on my main back in 2013, then started running around on my alt for kicks. Ended up (hesitantly at first) leveling conjurer on her since a friend wanted someone to go in to dungeons with, then got white mage, and kept up on her to 50 before turning around and leveling it up on my main. I've been a main healer since.
Now my alt is 60 on whm, pld, and drk. >.> Though she won't get much love in stormblood, I'll at least eventually try to get her up to 70 on one job at least. I don't have as much time as I used to :P
Edit: also I made a character of each race; because why not? Around 2.4ish I leveled one of them up to 50 to replay the 2.0 story so it was fresh for the at the time upcoming 2.5/3.0 versions.

For extra rooms in the fc house.
I play alt to help fc mates with their weeklies (when there were weeklies, and I'm sure there will be lockouts in 4.x again), so they have their 2 chests.
My main is a lala and I was snapped up by a fc when I was new (which i'm glad to be a part of!). I made Liss, my alt so I could make my own FC and level it myself. I also wanted a second character that I don't rush through the storyline with. So on my alt i've been levelling everything at my own pace. On my main I race to the finish line.
I've made subsequent alts that have then joined my FC, so then I share items and stuff.
I play alts for a few reasons. One is that I have different characters and I like to rp a bit with them. One is that I found a name I love and ended up creating an alt just for that. Another is my main is a male miqo'te, and while outfits are too damn cute on females, fantasiaing every other day is unreasonable as well as I still enjoy playing him as him. So for the last I can be both male and female for the same character at the same time so to speak.
I have an alt at 50 I never play. Back when I played a midlander, I wanted to try a miqo'te. Finished the 2.0 story on her but as more patches came out I never got around to doing any of it on her, also I played BLM on her and realised that job was boring as hell (at least at 50). Then au ra came out and my need to play a character with a tail was satisfied on my main.
Nowadays I really just use her to get and save some extra event furnishings I might want in the future that I dont have the space to store on my main
I play alts because I want to get an experience my main can't provide. I made a Lalafel monk that I named Krillin Kill'em (yes, completely glamored) because I found the idea to be hilarious. The leveling grind was the most fun I had in this game.
