Sigh... So many casuals in this thread
Ah, yes. Asking players to contribute something to the group or offering tips on how to do something they may not know about is extremely toxic. Very terrible. We should never ask anyone else to improve, it will erode the entire playerbase.Couldnt agree more man, unfortunately this community has become very toxic with dps and squeezing every last drop, and it pushes newcomers away. My friend tried to play a healer and was met with this kind of toxic mentality I cant for the life of me convince him to come back and try again.
This is why I said both sides are being ridiculous.
It IS NOT "You just want to watch Netflix while doing a dungeon."
It IS NOT "You just want me to dps so much everyone dies."
It IS "Fill all the gcds required for healing with healing and fill as many free gcds as you can with damage."
Why are people so lazy. At least TRY and maximize your potential (as long as it is practical). No decent person expects you to perform to max potential but if you are at least trying than that is respectful. Just completely refusing to even try is just lazy no matter what kind of lame fake excuse you try and come up with.
There's a difference between waiting for your tank to take damage and casting Cure II when he's at 90% of his max health, and having to babysit terrible players who don't avoid AoEs and a Tank who never uses cooldowns.
The latter happens, and yes, DPSing in this case is quite hard to do because a healer's role is very dependant on predictability. This is exactly why healing in a 24 raid is a nightmare.
But when you have a good tank who knows how to do his cooldown rotation properly, when he does a big pull with Hallowed Ground, as well as DPS who avoid almost every AoEs, then you're have a very stable party with minimal unpredictable events. In this situation, there's a lot of moments where you could be casting your DPS spells, because the rate at which your Tank's health gets eaten is very steady (and often slow enough that a single Regen is enough).
So, if you just stand there, doing nothing, not even a single 2.5s GCD cast because you're too scared of "what could happen if I'm not instantly ready?!?!", while your teammates are doing their best to ease your job, then it's almost irrespectful not to take these opportunities they create for you.
This means that yes, CMP (cast per minute) is a relevant metric when it comes to these situations. If another healer can cast twice the number of what you do in the same situation, then you suck. It's as simple as that.

Lol why is this such a hot button issue? Like, dps if you can dps. Heal when your suppose to heal? No one is going to expect you to heal if the team is losing HP, but throw out some damage when everyone is nicely topped off and shielded/hots. I main heals and I have no problem whatsoever doing this. It makes it fun. Stance dancing wasn't too bad but I did run into some problems where I accidently used a big heal while in Cleric, so the Cleric stance changes are welcomed.
This game is too boring if all you do is sit back and wait to heal.
Its about balance and finding yours. I'm here to tell folks its going to be okay. Just start small, toss an instant or two, and work your way into it. Most folks are not going to kick you for not being perfect and if you let folks know you're adjusting they will likely be even more relaxed. But do try. Test it out once the change happens. Then decide if its really not okay for you.
And best mitigation is no damage right? So basically dead adds or boss being killed faster.
I've got a recent Arboretum roulette run uploaded in my logs, it's fairly clearly labeled. That tank had less HP than me as SCH and was wearing maining accessories. He literally did 1/5th of my DPS to give you some idea of how under geared he was. Pulls were decently paced, the DPS were very respectable and the run took just shy of 20 minutes. I managed a 77% uptime on cleric with that tank and I can assure you that I was being *very* cautious. Tanks don't get much more noodley than that guy was
Consider recording yourself and replaying it from time to time, it's amazing how much you can miss in the heat of the moment and doing this really helps to get a deeper understanding of what's happening around you.

I absolutely abhor the fact that every time these topics come up, there are several people who pull the "I shouldn't have to pick up the slack of the DPS" card.
Literally no one is saying that the DPS in these hypothetical examples are doing poorly. Even if the DPS are doing amazing - brace yourself for this one - there ISN'T a cap on damage. The more you contribute, the better the run is going to go, and that's all there is to it.
As the game is, I don't blame people for being wary of Cleric Stance. It can be scary. If you are going to just be obstinate and refuse to TRY come 4.0, however, you can have a big old boot.
