When it comes to maps the horizontal and vertical consistency of the explorable landmass is kept, that doesn't mean they are the same way when it comes to the continent as a whole.

Compare the world map with Thanalan's in-game map. The western shore should tilt southeast much more than it currently does.
no, I tried to mess aroudn with it in a crappy photo editor, if you tilt it so the "south forest" more closely matches up to the east thanalan, "south forest" becomes more of a "west forest" and "west forest" becomes more "north forest"

Even if you proportion the maps correctly (lining up the x,y coordinates and matching box size on a 1:1) the zone line don't match up even closely between the black shroud and Thanalan.

one thing that SE did well in FFXI was created zone lines that made sense. if you exited one zone from the south west you entered the next from the north east.

In this case you exit Gridania from the south and enter Thanalan from a more east bound direction.
