Creating a different character vs lvling alternate classes on same character?

    Hey guys,

I'm a new player and loving the game so far. I'm liking my fresh lvl 30 Dragoon, but there are definitely more classes i want to try out. My question is: is it better to create a new character for leveling a new class or should i just level the classes on the same character? For your information, i'm looking to level a tank class and a monk.

In order to get my Dragoon, i had to level a marauder to 15 on my lancer main and missing out on the story quests xp and the gear that comes with them was a real pain to deal with.

I just don't want to invest time into something that might not be the right choice, so i hope you guys can enlighten me a little. Any tips will be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I recommend sticking with the same character.

Although you won't have the EXP from the main scenario quests, there's no shortage of EXP from Hunting Log, roulettes, etc.

You should be getting a variety of gear along the way for additional classes, gear you couldn't trade to additional characters even if you wanted to do the same main scenario quests over again. And as you point out, having other classes at sufficient levels unlocks more jobs.

Will do just that then. Thank you for the helpful response!

A thing that wasn't mentioned yet is that you receive an automatic exp bonus whenever you're leveling a class that isn't your current highest level class. So that's yet another reason to level all classes on one character (in addition to cross-class system, sharing gear etc.).

Don't forget to unlock the challenge log as well. You can get a fair chunk of bonuses off stuf you are doing anyway.

Advantages to doing it all on one character:
    • You don't need to repeat the Main Scenario.
    • cross-class skills can be easier to get, if the class you'd get them from is one whose job you're leveling up anyway. (Though it sounds like this advantage might be going away next month, depending on whether some of the changes I've heard about for StormBlood affect only the new SB jobs or the previous ones as well.)
    • You can earn or make gear for all your classes/jobs without needing to worry about what you can or can't transfer to other characters.

Advantages to spreading it between multiple characters:
    • You get to repeat the Main Scenario. (Yeah, that's on both lists. Some people like getting to repeat it. Others don't.)
    • You have a lot more room to store your gear, and won't be constantly having to choose what to throw away every time you get a new item. (You can even have room to keep a few glamour sets on hand.)
    • When end-game content has weekly caps or lockouts, you get to meet the cap for each job if they're spread between different characters, rather than having to choose which to gear up if your jobs are all on one character. (This applies only if you play enough to actually meet the weekly caps multiple times over, though.)

It's technically superior to use a different character due to weekly lockouts and currencies. But if you don't especially like the MSQ, or want to buy things from Mogstation, frustrations may prevent you from ever reaping those added rewards.

One advantage to leveling them all on one character that hasn't been mentioned yet is drops: When doing things like extreme mode primals or dungeons, all the loot that drops is useful to you. If you go with alts, then Murphy's Law dictates you're going to see that sword you wanted drop all the time when you're playing your marauder instead :P

Thanks for the helpful comments everyone. I will focus on one character for now and make it a melee oriented character since gear, cross class skills and lvl 30 job requirements overlap a lot among them. If i ever want to make a alt for weekly limit purposes i'll make it a caster oriented character for the same reasons.
