The same amount of people will gripe if they moved it smack dab in the middle of NA. There is always someone who be put out and will cry foul, there's always going to be someone who wont get the best of the best of the best and cry foul, and there's always going to be those who cry foul even if nothing really changed for them.
Either accept the cards you've been dealt or hit the road.
I'm not asking for perfect ping, I'm asking for a decent experience for everyone. Moving the servers from one side of NA to the other only flips the disparity. A central location would undoubtedly result in reduced performance for East Coast also, but it's better overall for the whole playerbase as it provides a more equivalent experience for those on the extreme sides of the continent.

Similar issue here. It's something that should hopefully be resolved soon, but if not the only other option is a VPN. :/ Pingzapper has a 7-day free trial and works decently for me so far, and is only $2.50/month if you buy a whole year... Hoping routing will be fixed by the end of the trial anyway. WTFast has a trial too, but it seems to be $10/month now after that. >_>

East Coast, my ping went up slightly to around 90, around the same ping I get from Blizz-West. Guess my route to Montreal was already terrible even though I am on EC so my gameplay hasn't changed much. Did a BLM dummy + slidecast test and one trial (Shiva), didn't seem vastly different.

Some people I know say their pings went up, but that the game actually feels snappier. Could this be to better server infrastructure in CA?

Making a VPN necessary to play the game and enjoy yourself, whilst completely ridiculous, is all good and well for PC users. Because, hey! Why not have to pay an additional subscription to have access to the game you also subscribe to? But what about the PS4 users?

I remember 2.0 issues, and the game being, 'Literally unplayable' (read, disconnected every 2 minutes, literally couldn't play.) And things got better, eventually. So I'm hoping things get better now. Because, jeez, a month before a major expansion and this happens? Ouch.

Yeah, I really don't want to pay for a VPN subscription on top of my FFXIV subscription, but I really don't want to quit either. I need my MMO fix, and there aren't a lot of good options right now.

Routers can have VPN support (and thus work for PS4 players), but it's a lot of research and possibly more money spent just to be able to play comfortably.

South of France, optical fiber (FTTLA):

    Before: 112ms
    After: 177ms

    Difference : +65ms

    From a player perspective
, this choice is hard to believe, all US East Coast players have now the ping we had from EU, and EU players crossed a threshold jeopardising savage raiding significantly.
Something in the middle of the USA like Austin or Dallas (130ms ping from EU) would have been a wiser choice, again, from a player perspective, because I believe Square Enix had their reasons to choose West Coast, and I respect that.

But the problem lies elsewhere, those high pings wouldn't be a problem, and this new location wouldn't be a problem, if, I believe, a part of the netcode of FFXIV was different.
Right now, the way actions are handled between clients and servers, decreases the potential DPS when the ping increases.

As a raider playing FFXIV since 7 years, from 1.0 to today, like every 1.0 players I started on JP Datacenter, when only these ones were available before ARR. Then my world was moved to NA Datacenter. And even if Square Enix just announced today very good measures to facilitate transfers, I just can't transfer without losing 7 years of friends from all over the world, that still play on NA Datacenter, because this is what makes this game such special (like FFXI).
