I haven't even checked my ping yet, but the servers are more more than triple the distance away from me. Moving the servers so far away was baffling.

Physical distance =/= network distance.
Until you've checked your routing and ping, don't assume that the two are related.

You can have a physically nearby network destination that has a roundabout routing (due to peering, contracts, ISP etc) that's slow, but a physically far away location can be responsive, due to being 'next door' on the network (also due to the same: peering agreements, backbone contracts, how your ISP is wired, etc)

I thought it was impossible too but when I managed to snag some 90ths and a 99th on savage with 250+ ping a while back I stopped using high ping as an excuse for mediocre performance.

EDIT: not saying you can't play well with high ping, but given a player of equal skill on a good connection vs a bad one the good one will outperform every time and saying otherwise is really dumb.

100 ping unplayable? I don't think I have every had under 180 ping since I first started playing.

I would also say that claiming the whole thing was pointless is a bit baseless considering that the move wasn't for improving ping. It was for providing a facility that would allow SE to add and upgrade its server infrastructure which was literally impossible in the old location due to limitations of the site and the utilities available.

I was playing at 90~ ping regularly and I double weaved just fine with some small exceptions (like some pvp rotations)

I played with ~90 the entirety of the time I played Heavensward, and ~175 the entirety of the time I played Realm Reborn. The latter, higher ping made certain content difficult, specifically Titan Extreme plumes and Twintania dive bombs which were the end game content at the time I took a break, but everything else was doable including the rest of coil and EX primals. Also, weaving more than one ogcd between abilities was impossible without clipping into the next one with that high ping. In fact, this inability to be able to consistently dodge plumes and dive bombs was the reason I took a break until I could get a better ISP.

The ping of 90 was noticeably better and suddenly dive bombs and Titan EX plumes were easy to dodge. With 90 ping I also had no issues completing any of the new to me content that I attempted in terms of latency, dodging and ogcd ability weaving.


Now I get ~45 ping due to the closer proximity of the data centre, and I do notice a difference. Abilities feel more responsive than at 90 ping (e.g. I can much more easily squeeze in 2 ogcd abilities after an instant gcd than before although it was still doable at 90 ping), and dodging feels even easier in the couple of content I have run so far. It's definitely noticeable, but not to the point where I feel like I was operating under a handicap at 90 ping. 45 ping is more responsive, yes, but not essentially so. I do feel like I was operating under a handicap with the 175 ping, though.

You're being pretty spoiled to think 100ms is unplayable. That's standard for a lot of people.
