Apparently to get from Colorado to Sacramento my ISP takes me through Dallas, Texas.

I think my ping is actually worse to this new data center, even though I physically live closer.

There's going to be weird cases like this for a lot of people most likely.

All I know is, i will be REQUIRED to use WTFast now to raid, when I was previously pinging 68-70ms to the montreal servers. Just think about that for a minute.

From CO to Montreal, I was getting 213-240ms. Yeah, it routes me through Dallas, but now I'm getting a consistent 92ms with 0 packet loss. I can live with it.

There's a minor tech hub in Dallas. Otherwise technology in North America is basically Silicon Valley / San Francisco, Seattle, Montreal, and Guadalajara. Back 'in the day' also the area north of Boston (used to have a lot of Robotics and Semiconductor before the dot-com era, not sure how it has faired since).

If you want to put a server near workers that will have the skills to maintain it - you put it in one of those places.

Couple other places in Mexico are on the rise too - especially as current US policies are chasing skilled non-US labor out of the US. Montreal is heavily game focused, though I have friends in '3D animation for movies' that have recently relocated to there so it might be trying to gain ground as well at the expense of current US policy.
