They did do it far enough from the release to at least let people try to figure out how to play with their new latency... silver lining?New Jersey - Went from 20ms at Montreal to 90ms if the results from the new address are accurate at this time.
I don't think I'll even notice a difference, but it sucks for everyone else whose ping is flying way up there. I actually find it kinda hard to believe they'd pull something like this right before Stormblood's release.

Good move to put the servers in California, only about 45 minutes from me now! Thanks SE!
Do either of you know the IP for the older server or something very close to it ?
I want to compare, I'm thinking I'll be pretty close to what I was at before based on where I live.
I also may have had a latency higher than what I'm used to but never paid attention in FF14.
Edit - looks like the move puts them 2.25 times further away :/

I'm just hoping it doesn't go pear shaped. The Montreal servers were finicky at best and downright tantrum at worse whenever SE mentioned an incoming maintenance on the Lodestone no matter how close or far from the announcement up until they come back up from the maintenance, if we're lucky for them to behave for a little while afterward until/halfway to the next shutdown. Those days being a thing of the past would be nice
Fun fact, when I started playing, a year ago, EU server connection in the Character Selection was rated 'Poor' by the game itself, while Aether was rated 'good'. The same happened a week ago. This is why SE gave out FREE transfers to EU players way back so they can play on their datacenter. It's not SE's fault EU players decide to play on NA servers (for whatever reason) after making a datacenter just for EU. You're not entitled to a free transfer that boat has sailed.
Interestingly, the same results happened to me in another game, TERA, whose EU servers, apparently in Dublin, were at 220ms, while the NA version had 130-170. Which, for TERA, was still questionable, but at least better.
