Not to mention have to set up a new east coast center - just leaving the old one would not have worked as it was the data center itself that was the issue with the previous one being an impediment to things like inventory expansion and non-split cities.

Please remember that FFXIV is officially sold in Brazil and maybe in other countries in South America and the decent latency we used to have is gone. After the change I have to deal with a 300ms latency and my FC colleagues are reporting 270-350ms. We don't have anywhere else to go other than quit the game.
The best case scenario is that SE creates east cost servers, since the company that is hosting their data has data centers on both west and east regions. They solved the problem for a group of players which I'm happy for, but at the cost of another group.
Are these terrible ping times you (and others from SA) are seeing while using a VPN? Many people on the US West coast were forced to use VPN's prior to this move and it looks like that may be in order now for some of the East coast depending on how their connection is being routed. If you use a PS4 it is a bit more of a hassle to set up the VPN but it is possible to do so. I have seen tracert's posted from SA that are going through Amsterdam...that would be the cause of the huge ping spike, eesh. Please remember that FFXIV is officially sold in Brazil and maybe in other countries in South America and the decent latency we used to have is gone. I can post my tracert if you want, just people from telefonica ISP are having these routing problems. Other people from SA are having bad ping anyway cause the underwater cables that connect SA to US goes to the east coast anyway. So by my tracert it goes basically. Brazil > New York > Seattle > California.
I went from 160 ping, which was ok, I could do progression, and I've been raiding since second coil (took a break on alex since I didnt enjoy it much, but cleared Creator Savage nonethless) to 235ms, which is REALLY REALLY hard to accept, specially on classes like BRD (my main).
So yeah, they screwed us up big time, there's no way around it.

Maybe there is one, go post here: Changes-to-FFXIV-Net-code-could-make-most-Ping-issues-Irrelevant!

Im from Rio, using Net 30mbps and Im getting 195-200ms top. Which one are you using? Please remember that FFXIV is officially sold in Brazil and maybe in other countries in South America and the decent latency we used to have is gone. *Don't argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Stop being entitled for a game you pay monthly for and accept this pants on head retard decision.

The problem isn't really the ping, it's the net-code of FFXIV that waits for a server permission before allowing you to use an ability, adding a harmful ping-tax to those with high pings, anyone with a ping below ~250ms could have the same responsiveness that someone with a ping of 10ms if SE was willing to make modifications to their net-code.
It's possible to have no DPS loss, a fully responsive game, etc. with high pings, but it requires modifications in the game. Instead of complaining about the new location of the Datacenter, it's more wise I think, to push SE to make adjustments into the game, so that locations doesn't matter in the end, as long as you have a ping below 250ms.
There a new topic about how net-code could fix the ping issue, I encourage you to go there and testify about how the game feels now unresponsive, how you lost DPS, etc. :

That was interesting read. With the upcoming changes in the expansion, is there a chance for this issue to be fixed? I understand very little of the technical mojo (obviously) so I'm wondering if such issue is too deeply rooted to be fixed or it's something that could be among the changes in SB?

That's the real question MuseTraveller, lots of us believe it could be fixed, because they somehow already fixed in some extend some skills like Mudra. That was interesting read. The thing is, instead of making all this noise about the new Datacenter location, it's better to tackle the root of the problem, and what can be fixed, so that East or West coast location stop to matters, and for this, everyone who feel their game is now not responsive enough, they feel they are losing some DPS, etc. instead of screaming on the Datacenter location, they should go to that net-code topic and give there their support and testimony, make some noise there, and those problems could be solved without having to move again Datacenters.
