No, not at all. I very much enjoy it when overconfident, hypocritical protagonists are humbled by nuanced antagonists. Lyse lied about her identity and is now pushing a very powerful individual to commit to a brutal war that is inevitably going to lead to an immense amount of suffering and death on both sides. The least that can happen to Lyse is being pushed around a bit by someone who just happens to be a better or more aggressive fighter than she is.

... or it could just be that, you know, trying to fight someone armed with a sword and shield while unarmed is a reeeeeeeeeally bad idea. (Also implying that Zenos would not have jumped at the first opportunity to go to war with Eorzea that presented itself, which based on what we know of his character seems extremely unlikely.)

Anyway, there are a number of reasons for Fordola being able to go one-on-one with Lyse. The former is armed, the latter is not; Fordola could be a match for Lyse in terms of skill; the villains need to be competent to pose a threat, especially since we're going into this one with our blessing still intact; and I do believe that, given they're seen clashing twice, Fordola is going to be Lyse's rival character, so they need to be about even in skill and power. Lyse could hold her own against Livia because that was a straight fight - against Fordola, she's at a rather significant range disadvantage.

P.S. Zenos is Yoshi-P's answer to people liking and agreeing with Gaius and the Garleans in general. Don't forget that.

It's a Final Fantasy game - so the 'realism' isn't the same realism that applies to the real world and a lot of combat is going to be driven by 'rule of cool' above all else, I feel. I also remember Lyse running right up to a Morbol and punching it in one of the low level duties - and whilst that may be a matter of gameplay and story segregation she's clearly not weak but that doesn't mean Fordola isn't just a better fighter. Which, honestly, is sorely needed at a point where it feels like pretty much every single major ally of the Warrior of Light is able to hold their own against the vast majority of foes that they come across. Seeing them roughed up and pushed around would be very refreshing and I hope that the initial attempts to free Ala Mhigo fail and that retaking it ends up being a more drawn out process than securing Baelsar's Wall.

Beatrix was never defeated by the party in FFIX. She thrashed the protagonist's party not once, not twice but three times. Better yet, she was a nuanced antagonist who ended up remaining loyal to her people and homeland without becoming an outright defector - which was a very refreshing element and a large part as to why I consider IX to be my favourite main title after XII. So here's hoping Lyse is beaten back at every turn and Fordola has a 'Beatrix' moment!

As for Zenos, he's definitely going to be someone that isn't particularly pleasant or reasonable. Given that there's people who fawn over Charibert and Grinnaux, though, I'm not entirely convinced he won't be without a fan following. Still, it's not a small number of people who desire Garlemald to be nuanced and given its own time to shine in the spotlight. At some point I have little doubt that we'll see peace between Garlemald and Eorzea. It's but a matter of when.

I just hope we get another character similar to Regula who ends up remaining loyal to his people and homeland but is willing to argue the benefit of forging some sort of beneficial alliance with the Warrior of Light and his allies. Putting aside the harsher stuff associated with Garlemald there is a lot of potential for prosperity and 'uplifting' through the use of magitek, which almost certainly can be useful outside of combat scenarios.

Well if the leader of Garlemald will stay the same I kinda doubt that we will see a true peace with them. At least right now Garlemald is used as the big threat next to the Ascians. They conquered big parts of Hydaelyn and I am just not sure who would be the next enemy if they would make peace with Eorzea. IMO I can only see that happening towards the end of this MMO and I am also not sure if this would still be the Garlemald some people like. (Maybe it will fall apart like Rome did)

Regula was also only fighting on our side for that one threat and if he had survived it I would not even be sure if he woulndt have been punished for that.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Apparently the garleans will be antagonists until 6.0 at least. so not till the end necessarily but they seem to have a time frame for when the actual threat is over, it's just a matter of how it ends.

By this logic Eorzea would have lost already just because of machina and airships alone.

It's worth noting that the only reason they haven't lost to machina and airships alone is because of Silvertear, and the subsequent unwillingness of Garlemald to commit to a full invasion campaign.

If I recall correctly during the same interview he pointed out how monstrous and unsympathetic Zenos would be, Yoshi-P also stated that people weren't supposed to like or sympathize with the Garleans, and that Zenos' monstrosity was in part a response to that. People will always find things to like about the villains, but they generally acknowledge when the villain(s) are meant to be evil, not try and force moral ambiguity into a place it doesn't fit so the villain(s) can be sympathetic. Go in with a clear mind and see what is, not what you want to see, is what I'm sayin'. (Note: I do not hang out on social media sites, so people liking Charibert and Grinnaux perplexes me. The former is an annoying pyromaniac and the latter is a bloodthirsty loose cannon, both so smug I just wanna punch them in their smug prick faces.)

I'm still convinced Fordola is going to be Lyse's rival; beyond that, I'm not keen on guessing what she's going to do. While he died a hero's death, van Hydrus was the legatus of an Imperial Legion. Only the gods know how many people were mistreated and how badly under his command and at his hands; it's up to individual discretion whether or not that one act of sacrifice is enough to atone for the things he did. (The story frames that it was.)

Peace will eventually be made with the Empire somehow. I also agree that Eorzeans should not be so stuck up about embracing magitek, but that is their decision to make.

It's widely acknowledged that if the Empire got serious about conquering Eorzea, we wouldn't stand a chance. The Alliance could barely hold off the tattered remnants of the VIIth Legion at the Battle of Cartenau; even with Ishgard's considerable military prowess added into the mix, there is no way Eorzea could stand up to the full might of the Garlean Empire.
