In regard to the "Thancred could be going traitor" angle mentioned earlier, I've been re-watching some stuff from 3.x and 1.x, and I wonder whether it isn't more likely that he is getting involved because he is still very fond of Minfilia/Ascilia, and his lingering guilt for failing to protect her father Warburton when they got mixed up in the escaped Goobbue rampage in Ul'dah.

From the very beginning, of all of the Scions, he has had some interest and concern for a citizen of Ala Mhigo. His words for Uriangier at the end of 3.4 indicate that he feels like interpreting and acting upon Minfilia's wishes is what he should be doing.
