I originally was going to go with "Zhana" as it's something of a default for me.
For a last name I just used an FFXIV Random Name Generator. When it spat "Zana Amariyo" out at me, I called it fate and went with it.

Originally, I started as a female character, cuz I was young and naive, had the name "Ereana Glyndwyr", wanted a name that used the first letter of my real name, which is "E", also to do with water, as it's my favorite element, so the last name translates to "Valley Water". Then I switched to a male character, and name change wasn't implemented yet, but I looked online and found "Eriyn" which I've taken as my online alias, and then "Destan" which means "By the still waters", then took on that name when name change was implemented. Currently my last name is "Kainoa", to match my significant other's, which is Hawaiian for the ocean/sea, at least according to my Google-fu.
Water and the letter E are basically themes for my character names, heh.
♥ Baby, tell me, what's your motive? ♥
Ah I love reading about all the thoughts that go into naming your characters <3 Even though we just normally glance past others' names in-game and often abbreviate them at first opportunity, there is often a whole personal meaning to them o: It's great!
For my first name I was inspired by the movie cartoon "Flight of Dragons" from the 80s. In it there is a good green dragon called Gorbash. I've always liked the name "Gorbash", but I've also preferred "Korbash", "Gorbash" but with a "K" instead. And Korbash is a name I've used in games and MMOs. Korbash has a dragon tattoo on his face in homage to Gorbash the dragon. I LOVE dragons.
For his last name, at first, it was Zhan. When I made my character in the closed beta, and at launch, I could not play the job I wanted, Summoner, and the sole casting DPS job available was Black Mage, so I landed in Ul' Dah with no Elezen NPCs in the area. I was completely unaware that, lore wise, all Elezens have French names. So I decided to change the last name to something French, while keeping Korbash as first name. The thing is, French is my mother language, I've read most everything translated in French,; I also studied French Literature and Cinema in College. I decided to use a last name from "Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien. When Frodo leaves the Shire he takes another last name, "Underhill", and in French, "Underhill" is "Soucolline". I think "Soucolline" look and sound so pretty, and it makes a really nice last name.

I use the name Sille, because from one of my favorite movies there was a really sweet girl named Cecile. I always thought the name was pretty, but I never really liked the way it was spelled, so I changed it to Sille. The names aren't pronounced the same way, Sille is more like "still" without the T but they're still quite similar.
The last name V'ness doesn't really make sense and it's made up for the most part. (It's 100% made up, what am I saying.) I don't even know why I chose a last name like this if I'm going to be honest, but I've never seen many V last names, and I always liked an "ess" sound, so I made up this name.On the plus side, no one else will have this last name, but on the down side, no one can pronounce it right haha. I've imagined it to be more like a "Vuh-ness" instead of "Vee-ness", but most say it the second way. I don't mind though.
At the time that FFXIV 1 was a thing I was playing a taple top RPG called Exalted. In it I had made a character called Amaterasu Aleria, technically exiled from her home and forced to wander the land where in she fell in love, had adventures, and faced off against lots of world ending threats including a moon drop!
Another character my first actually in 1.0 but I haven't played her since some point in early 2.0 Ascentia Ascendent, who was a demon powered chara who instead of being outright evil and angry she was this playful chara who just wanted to have fun and followed no one's rules. While she never got much game time (As all my RP game failed in one form or another) she was plotted to follow the path to becoming her own goddess, a goddess of Time and Space. Which would have put her against her Masters, who only wanted to destroy everything.
Dunkelsonn is the last name I've come to use in most games that support last names.
The story behind it is usually a justification for the jaded lone wolf nature of my characters.
Born during a solar eclipse, a dark sun, they immediately fell upon hard times. Their mother died during childbirth and the rest of their village took it and the eclipse as a bad omen.
Anything bad that happened was blamed on them and nobody dared associate with them more than necessary for fear of misfortune to befall them.
They've left their village as soon as they were able to fend for themselves and don't put a lot of stock into other people.
As for the first name, Karma is not one of my usual names. After using a Fantasia and changing not only my race but also my gender I've decided to find a somewhat gender neutral name so I don't have to rename my character if I decide to switch again.
After giving it some thought I've decided on Karma because it fits nicely into my character's outlook. They believe that everything happens for a reason and they deserve the misfortune that seems to follow their every step. Saving the world ought to offset some of that.

I got tired of all the potato/popoto remarks, so instead of putting up with the joke... I became the joke.
