What is the story behind your character's name?

at first i wanted to name my character Robin Shirley. Robin, since i really like the name and it's super tomboyish, and Shirley after Anne Shirley - she is awesome ^___^

but then while the waiting between the closed and open beta i found out about the lore names, and since i wanted to roleplay i decided a lore name would fit better. i wanted to play a Plainsfolk Lalafell, so i needed short syllables. I was going through every single syllable you can build with only two letters, from Aa to Zu and was writing down the syllables wich i find sounded nice. then i was combining the written down syllables in the ABB AB pattern until i found the best sounding combination. wich in the end was Karuru Karu. but maybe i have to tell you that i am german, so i am talking about the sound in german, not in english xD

My character's name originally came from an old RPG series that ended long ago, the Megaman Battle Network series. It was a pretty big series about 10-15 years ago, though hardly anyone would recognize the significance of my name unless they reached the endgame of any of the games in the series AND happen to know about the Japanese names VS the localized names.

So I took the name when another MMO known as Dragon Nest launched about 5-6 years ago in NA, intending to have a cosplay character of sorts there (though I originally wanted a more blatant name referencing the series, and am now glad that I never got it, for THAT name would have never passed for anything even remotely resembling realistic). Things happened, and after two lore-friendly fanfics later (minus the naming conventions) and a lot of community drama since I somehow ended up being tapped to become an official volunteer forum moderator for that game, the name started to take on a different life of its own for me, now representing a new character with an entirely different background and personality.

And so it was natural that when it came time to migrate to FFXIV, the name would come with me, now representing a memory of two games and a group of friends that also moved to FFXIV from that previous game. And of course, the name in my mind has now taken on the form of another unique character within this game. Though I don't think I'll ever write a fanfic for this game.

It's not lore friendly, but it could be a lot worse.

As for the ORIGINAL Maethus Xion... I honestly don't remember for his given name. His surname was sort of a bastardization of 'Zion'. Zion became 'Xion' (technically should probably be spelled Xyon, like Xylophone to retain pronunciation)

I went with Oraina simply because it was my mage's name in WoW and I liked the name. Fhey was a result of hitting random until I could find something that wasn't jibberish. Sun seekers have a weird naming system.

Also I have found 3 sisters and 2 brothers. (all of them cool people)

To me the only weird part is combining the Tribe Name/Letter with the Given Name to have it actually pronounceable. So lore-wise your character, as a Seeker, would be a Daughter of Fhey.

Meanwhile I've got a FC friend that keeps going between Keeper and Raen, and never saw any PCs sharing the same surname as her Keeper til she first went to Raen. Its a running joke "Hey, found one of your old cousins!" Did the same thing when I saw another Raen with her character's surname too.

So Re:Zero was the hot new thing when I first started XIV and I really liked Emilia's name, but I'd feel like a poser if I just stole it so I altered it a bit and that's how I came up with Ameela.
White is just the name of my in-game husband, I was Trussa before which I guess I just chose because it sounded cool.

I don't have a lore-friendly name because I had no idea that was even a thing back then and now I'm too attached to my current name to change it to Ameemee Amee or something.

My dog's name is Lady Capri (hence my Chocobo's name). In most games or online I am either Capriano or Capriana depending on the gender of my toon. Capri attached with an ending to make it sound cooler.

Waterfall, I don't know why I picked it, I clicked random few times, didn't like it, or maybe I saw Rainfall or something and I wanted to be original picked Waterfalls.

J'talhdi Belhi was a randomly selected one. I figured it was just gibberish and didn't even bother figuring out its pronunciation to start with. I made her as a trial character after buying FF14 during steam sale just to get a feel for the game. I usually do when trying a new MMO before I settle on an actual customised one.

Close to 100 hours later I realised I had gotten so into the game I hadn't stopped to make a 'real' character and by that point watching her through the main story I had got kind of attached. I took the time to figure out how to pronounce her name and found out about the lore of it and then unlocked the Aesthetician and tweaked her look slightly. I have never been able to bring myself to changer her much since even though I have fantasia taking up a slot in my retainers. FF14's story is her stage for me now and it wouldn't feel right to me for someone else to take her place.
