Achievements in 360/Steam/PS3 does absolutely nothing but basically tell you "you've done this" very rarely are you rewarded for obtaining them -- They create goals to strive for (the point of it) but they don't have to announce it because the game isn't about achievements -- In an MMO setting, achievements are content that they normally announce because it's basically like announcing "Hey we added new quests" because it's telling your players they just added something for you to do.
I consider trophies more of a self-enjoyment system. Recently earned my 33rd Platinum with Skyrim. I believe that Final Fantasy XIII was the only game that actually rewards me with anything and that was a wallpaper (thanks for that btw SE). However the self-satisfaction for earning said platinum's is the ultimate reward in my books.
