How would you handle this situation with mean spirited mentors?

Today during trail roulette I got into Nidhogg with four new players. Immediately the two healers (which were obvious a couple due to same last name) groaned in chat about the new players, which I suppose is fine you can complain if you want to, but still rude.

Anyway, I started the encounter and it wasn't going great, but we managed to get to the final phase until the stacking mechanic came up. A newer player ran away from everyone else (which is understandable), because they probably thought it was going to kill the raid, well it ended up wiping the raid, so I thought okay I'm going to explain that mechanic and we'll try again.

But... no the healer couple just wouldn't have it. They hazed a poor sprout for dying like 5 times during the encounter. They called people trash, said they should know how to avoid graphics by level 60.

I was patient with them nonetheless and asked them to please calm down and be nice to the new people. Instead they responded by sitting there characters down and demanding we abandon duty. I pleaded with them to please be considerate to the rest of the group, but they wouldn't listen. Eventually we had to kick them and I reported both of them after the duty.

Anyway, I feel that mentors are supposed to be good for the community, not scare people away from it. Why would SE give mean spirited people the opportunity to troll the community instead of lead it?

I would done the same thing you did, it is a violation to try to force an abandon like that and the sit thing is a non-precipitation violation as well. I am glad people sided with the vote kicking and not just abandon it.

I seen a lot of harassment though the novice network as well. Clearly players like these need more actions taken upon them to show them it is wrong to act in that manner.

Also from what I understand, do the report while in the duty as you wait for replacements or before leaving it once you beat it. From my understanding, it makes it easier on the Gms to find/quicker to find if you report the violation from the DF it happened in.

Being nice and helpful is not a requirement for becoming a mentor sadly!
So all the meanies who meet the requirements get their glorified mentor status crown to be really cool and special.

Can't be helped running into those people, it will probably always be an issue as long as rude people are around! (forever)
Best to ignore or report if you'd like to, but then move on.

Actually.. i do have the solution for this problem!
Introduce open world PvP, have a bounty board, and i'll go around crushing them beneath my heel! >_>
    That will teach them!

Why do people insist on saying this. Turn off your mentor status and turn it back on. When you do it explicitly stats you SHOULD be doing that.

As a mentor, you are expected to actively perform the following:
    1. Provide gameplay advice for new adventurers and other players.
    2. Be an exemplar for player etiquette.
    3. Invite new adventurers to the Novice Network, and answer their queries in the chat channel.

*Inappropriate mentor behavior may be reported.

So...where's the confusion? Help people and don't be an ass. If you can't do that then don't be a mentor.

You got a point but I think ShinMetsu is talking in more of a literal sense. There is no unlocking mentor that says "You have to prove your helpfulness by having an application reviewed by a GM team (or whatever) before you get mentor status.

Lol, but let's not hate on a possible autocorrect XD

Not all mentors are equal. I see this kind of thread at least once a month. The crown makes bad attitude players easy targets. There is no "you gotta be nice" requirement to get it.

Sadly, these are the status-hunter types of players, not truly mentors as the system intended. Clearly they thought the crown made them kings.

Honestly, the way the system is set up it is too easy for status-hunters to go get their crown, and I think that some sort of system needs to be set up to make people earn the right to keep their crown. Regardless, booting caustic players from the instance is the appropriate decision, I just hope you were able to get replacement heals and help the newbies get their clears.

Well, my first time I did Shiva EX synced, a mentor flat out called me an "stupid piece of garbage"
Even though I explained I have seen the video guide, and since I was on my WAR, I wasn't comfortable being the main tank because I couldn't tell the different weapons Shiva was holding to switch around. They insisted I would be main tank and after two screw ups that causes wipes easily, they said "Capriana you are a stupid piece of garbage" (I still have the screenshot to remind me of the day) I never reported the mentor with their fancy icon.

If you don't report these kinds of mentors (OP's story never really made it clear if the healers were the mentors though), then nothing is going to happen.

Report them for harassment and give all the info you can to the GM. When you sign up for mentor there's a thing you gotta agree to that says bad behavior will be scrutinized more harshly. While I've never seen any effect of this and you'll never get feedback on it due to privacy, all you can and should do is report them.
