The way I remember hearing it was WoW was kept simplified because Blizzard wanted people to run the game no matter how good or bad their computer was. If your computer still has an AGP graphics card or a 1080 TI, the game will still run.

Pretty much all of Blizzard games are designed this way too, an exception of Diablo 3(my laptop can play FFXIV reasonably well but chugs when there are a lot of things on the screen in Diablo).

There can be more character creation options without straying too far from consoles though.
