The devs have cited server latency as the biggest reason why they're unwilling to add more customization options. Essentially, each new slider that you add to character creation is one additional value that needs to be piped from the servers to every character that sees your character in game, so that your character can be properly drawn on their screen. Then you multiply that load by the number of characters you see on screen at one time. Even just one additional slider results in a massive boost in the amount of data being sent out at a time.

As a matter of perspective, the devs were similarly concerned about adjusting inventory size - and unlike the potentially hundreds of people who can see your character, only ONE person can see your inventory: You. They're grudgingly giving us a few more inventory slots, but I think it'll be a long, long time before they give us any additional values to play with on our character's appearance.

Which is complete BS given it's not a problem at all in any other MMO.

Isn't it? Last time I played WoW, there weren't sliders or anything like that. Everything was very limited and pregenerated there, too.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I seem to recall the exact same style of limitations there, likely for the same reasons.

    I wouldn't say so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62nKUdF2bQQ

It's similarly limited style (although unless we try to skew things with race numbers I'm fairly confident that Legion's released creation editor has fewer options than FFXIV's current).

WoW is a 13 year old game. You can look at pretty much any other MMO out there and see that advanced character customization should not be an issue.

Iirc GW2 and WS while similar style to FFXIV have more creation freedom (like making a "large" person in GW2), of course slider heaven would be like Black Desert or even Aion (although you can make some pretty horrific characters too lol). So perhaps for certain things choosing a panes like GW/WS/FFXIV and working from there might be good if people don't want to allow the creative abominations hehe.

Striving to be better than WoW would be a good idea, different/better .

Yeah, and I've mentioned this in the past for similar threads, but sliders aren't even really necessary. We just need a lot more "preset" options for body shape, face, eyes, nose, jaw, mouth, features (including scales, tails, scars, other markings), and the ability to use more than one of the "makeup" options.

Sliders would have been the best option. But if they can't do that. I will be happy with more presets as you say. More faces, more body types, eye shapes noses. 4 faces for a top tier premium MMORPG in 2017 is simply not enough.

Except the other MMO's are built to be for PC's, FFXIV is more or less built to be for consoles. No console can compete with a current computer or one even three years old regarding what it can display and how heavy of a load it can take. So things have to get axed. I would adore more customization options, but I'm not expecting to see it happening let alone one that is on par with Black Desert Onlines customization.

The way I remember hearing it was WoW was kept simplified because Blizzard wanted people to run the game no matter how good or bad their computer was. If your computer still has an AGP graphics card or a 1080 TI, the game will still run. I suspect SE took a similar approach with its console game build. Keep things simple so the game will run on a PS3, PS4, PS5, PS6 or so on into the future. Blizzard could add sliders and what not, but it would mean possibly losing customers who's computers might not be up to par. No real different from FFXIV, they could add sliders and such I would think. Just at the risk of losing customers who's PS3's and PS4's are now puddles of hot lava on their floors.

Pretty much all of Blizzard games are designed this way too, an exception of Diablo 3(my laptop can play FFXIV reasonably well but chugs when there are a lot of things on the screen in Diablo).

There can be more character creation options without straying too far from consoles though.
