I'm a legacy player who has kept her account active since 2.0 launch. I was in grad school studying 14 hours a day to get top marks, and to celebrate my coming graduation, I logged back in only to find out my casual FC had dropped me -- to be expected -- and also I had lost everything in my residential room. This included not only millions in gil of items, but also items that cannot be replaced.
If I had any idea that my room was gone (and needed to get my stuff within a certain timeframe), I would have put down my books long enough to address this.
I was so excited to return to the game I've happily thrown a lot of money at (two collector's editions, many years a paying customer), only to be so thoroughly let down.
My suggestion: consider sending a notification to the user's email for cases where their belongings are about to be wiped out. This is a significant investment players make in their gaming experience, and this situation has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
