    I wouldn't be so sure. Here's something I made up in about 15 minutes.

    Doll Mage: Mages that attack targets, and as they do, they absorb fragments of that enemy's soul, which is then used to animated minions to overwhelm their foes. You'd start out being able to animate only one minion, but as you level you'd be able to animate several minions to attack the enemy while you cast your own spells at the enemy (most of which deal damage but also enhance your minions or resets their duration).

    Story would be that they were originally necromancers, but after some event had to go into hiding and change their art, leading to them starting to use wooden dolls to bring to life in combat instead of corpses. The questline would obviously have you go against someone who is trying to use corpses (or is killing people to use their corpses, believing it to be a "pure" form of their art). The weapon could be a scythe; maybe a weapon that is both a scythe and a phylactery.

    And before you tell me that wooden dolls can't be scary or threatening, remember that this exists.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

    **summons a wraith to attack with a potency of 50 for 30 secs
    reaping wave (100, 25y range, 2.5 sec cast)
    **potency increased by 20 for each wraith active
    wither (45 periodic, 21 sec duration, 25y range)
    **20% chance to spawn a wraith to attack the target for 30 secs
    plague blast (100, 25 periodic, 15 sec duration, 8y radius, 25y range)

    Biggest issue to tackle was trying to work around with a concept that would be slightly more acceptable to audiences like China, who have bans on most depictions of the undead (along with many, many other things).

    That's why I would opt for dolls. Though to my knowledge the China issue involves things like bones and the display of internal organs, which is why WoW had to alter stuff like undead player character (whose bones showed through the skin) and abominations (who had their internal organs hanging out). We've seen plenty of dead people in FFXIV so far, and even have our Southern Thanalan zombies (which, to my knowledge, have not been altered when the game released in China).
