What dps classes did people who hate the dps classes in this game play in other games if they think ffxiv dps is boring or simple or all the same? I'm not even trying to take a side in the argument, I'm simply curious. If possible, I'd be interested to know specific expansions as well.

Lineage II, I played Moonlight Sentinel, Ghost Hunter (was hero on both), also played Storm Screamer, I wanna say it was around 2007-2008 ish. In Aion I played the Summoner and Sorcerer class in end game in 2009. FFXI was Dancer, Ranger, Thief, Blue Mage and Samurai (Played nearly all jobs in FFXI, but those are the only "melee" ones I had played fully)

I really, really find every melee class in FFXIV quite boring, I am not too fond of "Bard"...I would LOVE a Ranger class and a support type bard WITHOUT a cast bar, we are not casters.

I dislike ninja also..would love a better dagger class, something without mudra, and my biggest gripe with NIN is how the attack animations are multi hit..but then its a SINGLE HIT, get outta here with that lol. I could go on for hours on end explaining my dislike for each melee job, but meh.

Summoner is my main, since ARR release. Before that, in 1.x..I played and enjoyed all jobs. Not anymore lol. Now they are all way too samey...I have leveled and tried them all at end game. I did enjoy Bard in 2.0 also..until that dreadful cast bar.

How close does it need to be to a WoW-style MMO? I haven't played WoW, but since the design principles are similar I don't think I would enjoy their DPS classes. If you cast the net a little broader... GW2, I enjoyed Elementalist and Engineer, for example. Firefall, back when it was playable, even the simple and straightforward assault class was pretty fun. If you're willing to go even broader than that... Heroes of the Storm, pretty much any of the Specialist role. Sgt Hammer for straight, high DPS, but sometimes characters like Sylvanas or Murky as well. World of Warships, Carriers, but sometimes high-DPS Cruisers.

Personally I'm aware that FFXIV's DPS design in inherent in the type of game it is so I'm not expecting the devs to wildly change it up. But it just probably won't ever be something I enjoy.

edit: Oh, to add one more. The Secret World! It doesn't have classes, but... I went assault rifle spec. Hybrid DPS and healing. It was fun. The combat in that game gets a lot of complaints but ARs were actually pretty well done, IMO.
