T'would be nice if they surprised us by releasing said new caster class in 1.20. I know they wont ofcourse but that would be an unexpected surprise.

red mage will most likely be something all new look at bard now its a ranged DD/buffer, we already have 2 "red mages" being con & thm since they can do almost all the magic in the game right now
knowing SE gla would probly make rdm on the next wave of jobs. what i want to see is a crap load of classes & jobs from all the FF's just to mix things up.
Ranged DD doesn't mean the class uses a ranged weapon, Thaumaturge and Black Mage are going to be ranged DD's even though they won't use ranged weapons because their spells are ranged.
a mix of melee and range, in such a manner, that requires doing both.
aka, use some sort of melee ability, which grants a sort of instant cast to the next nuke.
then run out of melee range, to use a nuke (which can only be used far away) that grants another needed buff. (makes the melee ability ready to use again?)
But yeah, Ranged DD/debuffer WOULD sound like a mage, but looking at BRD, sounds more like a counterpart to BRD.
Lacking some dmg, to help everyone's dmg by lowering mobs defense, etc.
Might be Musketeer class, which becomes xxx Mage job. (Blue Mage maybe? since they used guns in X-2)
Then again, Might be Arcanist like everyone else suggests, and then is Time Mage or something.
(Time Mages main debuffs being slow, stop (stun or sleep like), teleport (not really a debuff, but maybe a push back?) Gravity(weight not hp dmg), and MAYBE a reverse regain, making enemies loss TP over time... or other DoTs to HP/MP of mobs.)
As for the "Melee Mage" PGL has this now...
For Jack of all trades, a few grab part of this, but never all aspects of this.
and as for using swords, there is only hope for a fencer again. (My hopes are, Fencer becomes RDM, which is a melee Healer)
Given that they've all but eliminated dedicated debuffs(save sleep and debuff effects on certain spells), and given that Mystic is already in the .dats, I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being the defacto debuff caster in the future, although it's up in the air whether it'd be a class or a job. If it's the former, then I could see it leading up to Time Mage potentially, which would be pretty epic. Yoshida has mentioned before(half-jokingly) that when(or if) they add Arcanist, it'll be trap-based and probably lead into Geomancer.
Given that Archer leads up to Bard, it would no longer surprise me if they had Fencer(assuming they add it) lead into Red Mage.
At least one red mage was happy they could fire a bow.

Red Mage could have multiple job prerequisites. You might need to level GLD, THM, and CNJ, to unlock the RDM. Make the weapon of choice a Rapier, and you got yourself a RDM.
I was thinking what a Time Mage would need to equip in order to be a TIM/TEM, and thought a pocket watch or an hourglass would be cool. A pocket watch being much cooler.
Not only that, but thier relic (Excalibur, Madau), mythic (Murgleis), and empyrean (Almace) weapons are all swords or daggers to boot, that and they have absolutely no proficiency in the use of staves.
As for a RDM's ability to melee, I used to do good melee dmg on lesser colibris, using a hornetneedle and enblizzard II. (or enaero II if I wanted to paralyze it) The party rarely objected, since it was my policy to solo unless main heal was a SCH. (one less refresh to worry about.) I never had any trouble maintaining my haste/refresh cycle, and the tp I was gaining I could use for Energy Drain, doing more dmg while making my mp last even longer.
LOL, I can always count on Kiote to jump to wild conclusions about "facts" that dont even appear in release notes.
