i don't know why you think redmage. i think timemage :P

also to say redmage is one of the most beloved is a stretch. it might be your most loved. i personally all ways thought of it as jack of all trades master of none, it had white and black magic, but was weaker than black or white mage when casting. it could use melee weapons and could use decent armour but again it was never as good as a real warrior class.

anyway i see arcanist/timemage as next mage class

Well, I thank you all for putting my mind as easy. I don't data mine and I had not seen any discussion on this Fencer Class. I am well aware that Red Mage will be a Job not a Class, I was simply using the term Class as the standard name for a Combat Style in an MMO.

For the record Red Mage has been proficient with ranged attacks since the first Final Fantasy and they have also always had the debuffs along with the heals and nukes. The debuffs, however, were never restricted like heals and nukes were. My conclusions were not wild assumptions they were logical steps.

If you are a sword-RDM in FFXI while in a party you are doing it wrong.

Yeah obviously...since RDM's AF weapon was a Rapier.

While it was inefficient for a RDM to melee in situations where you're fighting a god or anything with an AoE ability like silence or petrify, any other time it wasn't a huge deal.

Because there are only 6 "Mages" in Final Fantasy. Yoshida said he wanted to use Classic Classes for Jobs

White Mage
Black Mage
Red Mage
Blue Mage
Green Mage
Time Mage

There are other Mage like Classes, but they are not "Mages" and none of them specialize in Debuffs.

I dont get "ranged dd" under caster classes, isnt that the whole point of a mage - nuking from afar?

That's a good possibility.. Better than Green Mage at least. Personally, sequals aside, tactics is the only FF i do not like. But if they have to reach that far for Job names, so be it.

Funny, I can't find any evidence of that. There wasn't even a ranged weapon in the first FF game (they used swords btw), and everything else written about them points towards them always using a sword, specifically a rapier or epee type.

I think the first and only time outside of FFXI was FFIII where the RDM could use a bow... I have not looked at RDM through all the games yet and I never used a bow on my RDM in any FF game...
