Other modern and old MMORPG's have done this, SE has done this in the past with success, they can do it again.
What has been announced that isn't different? THere's plenty of new stuff coming, even new jobs. What am I missing here?

You think so? HW open-world is awful compared to ARR imo. Larger canvas = less refined.

For me it's about correcting HW mistakes (leas what I thought were). #1 open world negative space #2 raid tiers back to ARR's regular difficulty & savage option.

Of course that's not happening though so I'm pretty :[

My concern goes with leveling up portion. ARR 1-49 is still the best aspect to this game, rushing people passed to HW grind to SB grind just to get them to hop on the end-game treadmill faster. That has me concerned.

    4. No new graphical options.
    5. More tomestones and they'll have the same weekly limitations.

We're getting an underwater feature, but so far it seems as if this is the same "safe" expansion Heavensward was. What's really here that's going to shake things up for the players? All the vibes I'm getting at the moment is that this is another Heavensward, which is confusing as the budget is a lot higher.
Well, they never indicated they were changing 1, 3, or 5. 4 isn't really true, they are tweaking the graphics along with the new minimum specs, as I understand it. I don't know why 2 is surprising.

I'm perfectly OK with "another Heavensward." New story, new zones, cool new jobs, new stuff I'm still having fun doing two years later? Sign me up! The only thing I didn't like about Heavensward was how they made crafting suck, and by uncapping the high-end scrips and not introducing new systems it seems they're going to avoid that pitfall.

Higher budget doesn't necessarily mean more content. It could and should mean better content, better planning, and less issues. And it also clearly means more marketing (see also: Wrestlemania).

It's not that we expect a new game, but there are just certain things you can really only do so much of before it gets tiresome to some. To a large portion of the community, the game is getting stale and I'm hearing less and less people getting excited for the game. People who WERE excited are becoming more disappointed the more they find out about SB. That's not good. Yes, plenty, -plenty- of people will still play and that's fantastic! But if a company keeps losing more and more customers, eventually it'll be a trickle where a grand river once flowed.

There are basic things that would add to the game, aside from character customization.
Easier crafting - such as pulling from retain inventories without having to dig around.
More open and expressive dungeons. While I don't play WoW much at -all-, it's dungeons were huge and fun. Even GW2 had incredibly fun dungeons to run.
More raids like the Coils were. Making something have a seemingly endless pool of life does not make it HARDER, it just makes it more tedious (imo).
Add flying to older zones now, we're coming up on a new xpax and you have you have to be level 50 to even unlock flying, so new players -aren't- going to ruin the original maps for themselves. They still have to travel by chocobo.
More interaction with the environment. Eorzea is BEAUTIFUL but it's a lot of wasted space. Have FATEs actually impact areas temporarily depending on fails / successes. Add random treasure chests around the world to encourage exploration. Add random NPCs that get in trouble and need help from mobs and they'll give you something cheap - food or potions - just for helping them out.

I want to know what games people are playing for thousands of hours that don't end up feeling stale.

Anyways... Other things exist. When you inevitably grow tired of this game, like any other game you spend months (if not years) on, you should take a break. You will force yourself to burn out, and come to conclusions like this.

Further, the core mechanics and gameplay loops are defining characteristics for this medium. Ours just so happen to be GCD/Alt-Tab combat, Tomestone/Gear treadmills, and aesthetics. If it doesn't fall into those categories, it's just fluff and distractions. And in regards to those extras and tangents, more is not always better either, especially if it's at the cost of quality. But ultimately, if you want a sweeping change to the core, you want a different game entirely. There's nothing wrong with admitting that, and finding what you're currently wanting in another game or medium.

It's really a matter of peoples opinion at this point, gamers are aging and those of us who play MMOs aren't all young and have nostalgia for certain types of things, where as more and more games tend to be grinding towards a sort of money making sweet spot. Many of us who are used to broader strokes in development for MMOs. Personally I like to see more open world content and that's my opinion, I like to see more difficulty in defeating regular content rather than it be just breezetown up until the very last stuff (and even that gets easy after they release the level cap a few months into a new expansion). I would welcome lower level dungeons that offer gear that scales with level, some content that drives us to look back at older gear that could be useful in these capped dungeons. Stuff like that, but that's my opinion. I know many people like and prefer this vertical progression and wouldn't get much out of the change in pace or types of gameplay. Like i said originally it's really just a big shmorgishborg of player preferences blending from past MMOs. I came from XI if that wasn't apparent simply by my opinions.

We've had the same discussion when Heavensward came out and the answer is still the same: It's an expansion, not a new game.
Sure, some new angles to certain content would be very nice (looking at you, one-way-rush-through-dungeons), but I wouldn't expect them to change things up completely.

The level 70 gear you get from the box is just something to hold you over until you get the tomestone set over the following weeks of capped grinding and will help with level 70 instances having a set in stone gear minimum. They are going to be left behind quickly.

    This

see it as something like AF1 or ilevel 55 gear during 2.0, while first tome gear started with ilevel 70

Really, the only "disappointment" I have is just no new character creation options other than what they have said about hairstyles (two new ones at launch, new ones every patch, and variations via the aesthetician), but that's more so because I was really hoping for the addition of tattoos or something to add a bit more uniqueness to my character. (Plus, in her original story from outside of FFXIV, she has a tattoo on the back of her neck, so it would just be even more amazing if I could have had something similar to that in FFXIV.)

    Maybe some day. ;_;

Other than that, I'm perfectly fine and still just as hyped for Stormblood, if not more so after playing with the Benchmark all afternoon.
