A good amount of aftermarket coolers are leaps and bounds better than stock and there are some motherboards out there that have an auto overclock feature that will make some use out of that better cooler.

just stick a small dot in the center and pop the cooler on. Boom, done.

I've done just that and it didn't end well. Why I spread it now and why you see some aftermarket coolers with a thin square off paste on them and not a dot.

I've never had an issue. Do it this way on servers all the time. Just have to make sure you have enough on there so it actually spreads.

I applied enough and it didn't spread evenly. Large amount on one side and less on the other. Current computer I built has been running w/o issues, with OC for almost 3 years by spreading it myself.

I've had mine OC'd for years as well, and i just did the dot :P
