Expecting commendations, even when doing a good job, will just eat away at your sanity. I've had the dungeon-of-my-life many time as Healer or Tank (and I'm not slouch on DPS-Healing, or doing what it takes to make runs silky smooth as tank), and sure, sometimes you click 'exit' and not a single commendation appears (and I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel bad sometimes), but having said that, it's just one of many systems out there where it'll boil down more to player choice than it will certain standards.

I see many great posts on the forums but I rarely feel inclined to use the Thumbs Up, for example, just like you'll reach a point in FFXIV where most people just want to get X done and get out to re-queue ASAP [commending people is wasting a precious second of lifetime]. Still, I usually commend people, sometimes because I've noticed someone being awesome, other times because I get a fistful of gil for the weekly commendation requirement - and never if I feel everyone was bad. I'd be hypocritical if I expected people to do more than that for me no matter how good I play(ed).

I think the general guideline I have is "this player can definitely raid in this game, or probably already does well and it shows". Or exceptional circumstances. There are times I don't even a comm at-all. Like the in-prog Bailsar's Wall at the last boss I got as PLD, the Astro didn't DPS at-all, cards were a mystery, the two SMNs were horrible at damage. I was in Sword Oath the whole fight just to get through it, it was painful. That is a no comm situation.

I've been giving more nods to DPS lately, as I queue more as DPS, and that's just because I've ran into these kind of players that fit that description. Whereas the tanks or healers can be seen as just forgettable. I know that may sound a bit harsh you probably know what I mean when you see an Astro that just holds cards forever, the tank that can't mitigate worth their life, losing aggro, or playing the stance dance game but isn't good at it, yada yada.

I usually see an influx of comms on reset and shortly after. Many people just do their 5 comms for challange log and don't click that notification until next reset.

99.9% of the time, if my healer is dpsing (in cleric stance), they will get my comm. If i see a tank stance dancing is a runner up. Or if somebody just endsup makong me laugh (bard ripping hate and dying and has something whitty to say). It all really depends.

But the person who doesn't say anything or do anything beyond "pew pew or make HP go up" and waits to be the last one out hoping for default comm...lol no.

The only time I get upset at no comms is when its a run where there are new people, I explain all the mechanics so they dont go in blind, I perform admirably both dpsing and keeping everyone healthy, I banter socially during the run, offer positive reinforcement when newbies do well on new fights, only to find at the end of the run not one of them thought to give me a comm. It doesn't happen often... but when it does, I really notice.

How many men am I involved with? Well that depends... do you mean men as in males? Or just midlanders?

Personally no - we're doing the job we're supposed to do. I don't give a tank a commendation for keeping hate, or a DPS a comm for doing damage. But if I see a Tank has used initiative at a point where something could potentially wipe the party and he's saved us, or a DPS has cleverly interacted with a mechanic or has otherwise remembered to use their available support utilities then yeah, I'll comm them. In full parties if none of the above happens, I'll probably just comm the other healer for a job well done.

I never comm...ever. I find the whole thing subjective. I don't expect comms, don't give comms. Who am I to judge if you did 'acceptable' or not. In my opinion: If we finished a dungeon/raid/trial the tank held hate, the healer kept people alive, and the dps dsp'd...we won. Comms for everyone.

I take that back...I will comm if something absolutely 'what the fuck just happened' amazing took place. Like dps solo'd the last 3% of a boss after a wipe...or healer gets everyone up and back under control after a wipe. Other than that...fuck comms.

    Edit:

I used to get annoyed at never getting comms as paladin when I used Clemency to heal heal, or save the cleric from dying, figured actually saving people from a party wipe would be commendable...but then I realized the same I said above...what I think should be worthy of a commend, is clearly not the same as what the other player thinks is worthy. I'm sure there are people out there that will not commend a Cleric unless he has 1,800dps per second in any given dungeon. Harsh..but his guideline for comming people.

I'm sure everything has been said on the topic, but oh well.

Tanks/Healers are a bit spoiled when it comes to coms, tbh. I see healers complains in LS too when they don't get a com, because they have come to expect them at this point lol. I've had to keep my mouth shut a couple times because if they knew the coms went to me as NIN, they'd lose their shite.

I think what people don't realize is the higher level you get, the pickier people are about giving out coms. In the earlier levels tanks/healers got coms for showing up. In stuff like expert roulette, people are looking to speed run it, which means they are eying up the DPS that knows their Job enough to help that.

But it really boils down to the people you end up with. Some com based on performance. A lot com purely on "was this person pleasant to play with?"

    actually this ^

for me it's not about skill or gear at all but about the teamwork - if a overgeared tank mass pulls cause he is used to this in a grp with 2 undgeared dds I surely give the com to one of those not to the tank. also I like healers who find a fair balance between sup & dps, here again f.e. a sch who's in cleric 99% of time relying healing/buffing to their fairy won't get any comms from me. sometimes I found myself flashed of a clever LB usage along the way, this is what catches my attention. in the end it's all about chemistry....

i tend to give comms out regulary. i don't get your issue comms are really subjective to someones whims like, being friendly, glam, played well and the challenge log even pays to comm. that being said I've wanted comm someone and he/she leaves the duty like their pants are on fire b4 i can. if you main healer you will be swimming in comms I'm just shy of 3000. i don't expect comms but its always nice when i do.

I get more comms as BLM these days than as any of the healers, and that's because i simply move to dodge mechanics rather than eating them.

I use cleric stance as much as possible, and i don't let people die. People just aren't impressed by healers anymore. Some people see the people constantly switching in and out of cleric stance as just doing their job, and nothing extraordinary. Others get annoyed that their healer is dpsing, and don't think they deserve the comm.
