I wouldn't say the WoW community was less tame. Go look at their forums for for example. Things that go on there would not fly here. In game stuff "can" be just as bad or worse. I had to tone myself down when I stopped playing WoW and started FFXIV. If WoW can't get their voice chat right, I don't think SE can. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't want it to happen.

As for it being used to harass someone, yes, it can be, but so can a lot of other things.

Sorry, I think I phrased that wrong. I meant WoWs community is overall worse than ours so by that logic I assume that just because a voice chat doesn't work there doesn't mean it wouldn't work here. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes it is different because to use a third party program you have to tab out of game, start it up, wait for it to load, enter the chat room address, wait for that to load. An in game client could have a simple on/off switch. Much simpler.

And that worked for other mmo's like WoW's so well.

Actually, did you know WoW even had a voice chat? It's so horrible that it's a sin to even mention the existence of it on that game. And even looking outside MMO section here, have you seen how voice chat can go? In Overwatch I was in the PvE event and have had people blow their head off at me over a single number. Repeat, that's not pvp. That's in their Uprising event, which is pve.

And as just an added note, are you telling me you're going to go into a voice chat with 3 random people in your expert roulette? Because I'm doubting it. And if it's in PF, people who weren't going to join your discord or vent weren't going to join on the built in voice either, if it was even any good.

Yes I would go into a chat with three random people. I go into voice chat with 7 random people for trials quiet frequently. Why would 3 be any different or worse? Can't say I've experienced what you have in Overwatch either. All my experiences in their voice chat have been pleasant with people offering advice and such. Would need a larger sample size than our experiences to gauge it obviously but I do think people blow how bad it is out of proportion.

In my personal experience, if it's not a voice chat system used to discuss how to do a fight when it's a learning party, voice chat become extremely annoying or distracting, depending on the situations.

DISTRACTION:
If it's general chat while farming, some people tend to do too much laughing and talking that they start losing focus and start messing up or dying.

ANNOYING:
Going overboard with the mama jokes, telling the tank his dps is too low, or just TELLING people what to do rather than SUGGESTING what they should consider/try out.

In DCUO and ESO, I generally stay out of voice chat because I like to hear the game's audio, primarily the music. I do not want to hear a rap battle coming from your mic when you don't even have the mic to your ear to hear asking you to turn it down.

If I join someone's invite to PS4 chat, Discord, TS, etc, and they are talking about everything other than what we're running, or the game in general, I will leave the chat after some time. If we're playing FFXIV, I care not of you K/D in Call of Duty.

This has been discussed many times and the official response it: It is in order to prevent harrassment.
And I can see why they choose not to implement voice chat - harrassment via voice chat would be more difficult to "prove"; right now if someone is harrassing you via chat there will always be logs to prove what has been said by whom to who etc.
Having an official voice chat would also send the strong message of "You have to use voice chat to play this game, since its an official feature and the devs obviously intended you to use it!" - and thats while 90% of the game really dont require a voice chat at all.

As a female player I also recall a certain instance each time someone asks for voice chat in the game: Back when Titan HM-kill-sells were a thing, I was standing in Ul'dah, reading a shout of a group of people offering a free Titan HM-Kill for any woman who would join their TS. I am still a little disgusted by that - but knowing that that sort of people exists on top of all those people who'd tell me what they did to my mom or who scream and flip out over a wipe, tell people to kill themself etc. etc. really makes me not want an official voice chat.
Besides: There are already voice chat tools that we can use, they're just not official, so SE wouldnt have to deal with all the harrassment-bullshit that could happen in there - it also gives us more control over who we're voice chatting with and when we are voice chatting. I'm already seeing all those threads about people who have been kicked because they didnt wanted to use voice chat (specially in content that really, really doesnt need you to use it).

So, good reasons against voice chat:
- prevents harrassment (specially for females, if you ask me)
- sends the signal that voice chat is now mandatory - when it is not. Except for savage and ex-primals every content in this game can be cleared without voice chat - and even those can be done without.

I certainly dont want to voice chat with randoms in a dungeon...

Also remember SE isn't very good at implementing features. They also seem to nickle and dime server structure. Not such a good idea to add extra strain.

The number of roulettes I do with all players speaking the same language is actually quite low. I can't see it being used in Europe at all.
So taking the time to develop a feature as well as upgrading data bandwith by a big amount for something that won't get used by a lot of your playerbase is pretty much a wasted investment.

There isn't an game with ingame cross play voice chat aswell. Consoles are more open than in the past, but these are still closed system after all. Some stuff is allowed, others is not.

Discord has a mobile app that works great. A few of my FC members use it.
