Anything that happens after that really doesn't matter anymore. The damage is already done. It already looks bad. Is it really going to surprise anyone that servers may merge? Is anyone even going to keep beating the horse they've freshly killed?

So, all that's left is pleasing the die-hard players who are staying, because they're really all that's left. The only cavalry-over-the-hill FFXIV has in waiting is 2.0. So you may as well make 1.0 as comfortable as possible, bring the remaining players together, and not worry anymore about an already spoiled reputation in the media.
Agreed. IMO even the relaunch of 2.0 might not recover the game...it already has a history plenty of failures that will be brought back every time the specialized media talk about it. and at current situation it's possible that a server merge actually having a positive impact to the game since more players together = better chance of a good experience regarding party-based contents that were/will be added, preventing the frustration not having enough people to do stuff can cause.

Server merge must happen. Some might see this as bad publicity for the game; I see it as SE taking care of their remaining customers and making sure they can enjoy the game so they can bring in more customers in the future.

Even on a low population server, it seems like there is always competition for farming mats/NMs/coffer camping/non-instanced content. There doesn't seem to be any shortage of people to play with/linkshells to join...etc. Unless the majority of "active" players quit when billing starts, I really do not see the need to merge servers yet. If servers were merged now, I think there would be too much competition over the limited content that this game currently has available.

there doesn't seem to be any shortage on some servers, but other servers it is absolutely obvious there is a shortage. there is surely a shortage for players when you have issues even having enough active people online to get a party together to go to a stronghold or other content even when that one group would be the only one in the area.

i can literally take a group to a stronghold and coffer camp all day long and may see 1-2 groups other than the one i am in show up there. when even the bigger ls's in your server are having to combine together to have a big enough group to even go to do ifrit or a coffer party then there is a severe shortage of people.

i am not saying that all servers are that way, but when there are servers that are that way then combining those tiny servers would be good for the people, that they expect to pay for the game, to be able to play with other people.

I don't see how this could be a bad thing. Negative publicity isn't a problem. The MMO community's opinion of this game is already as bad as it can possibly get. The only people who care about this game are the people playing it. There's almost no interest amongst the larger MMO community.

The only issue I see is that the current servers are so horrible according to Yoshi that they may run into serious problems trying to do something like this.

I don't think you're going to get an answer any time soon, unless there's absolutely no way they'd ever merge the servers. Otherwise, it's all going to depend on what the situation is like after billing starts. If the population holds up fine, then there's no reason to do anything.

I would think its pretty clear by now that whenever an issue is brought up by players that they have no intention of addressing, they just stay silent. Even when its an issue like this that is clearly a big deal to the players,if its not on their radar, it never will be. I think a lot of their efforts to "communicate" with players is just a dog and pony show. They don't even have to merge any servers to fix this issue, all they would have to do is let us switch worlds on our own. They would then be free to leave the worlds everyone moved out of up and running until 2.0. All we really want is the chance to get together until then. Much like the linkshell issue though, this is one of those issues that seems like an easy fix and something the players want, but sits under the "we will look into it" catagory of response by SE. One of the things that has really begun to sour me on this company in the past year is their desire to try and fix things for players that haven't even shelled out any money for this game yet (ie potential consumers) while leaving those of us that have bought the game and will be paying sub fees in the dark. I think they have demonstrated by now that they don't give a damn bout the current player base.

Wait, did people stop playing this lately ? Really i ddnt watch population, I barely log on. But if so, thats too bad. Mabye server merge could help a bit till at least 2.0 is out.
