I'm going to be honest. As you progress further into the MSQ you will realize very quickly that its frustrating because you have to cast every dot on every mob. Yes I know tri-disaster exists but when they're spread out so well to put SMN at a disadvantage that even using bane makes them harder to beat then I dropped trying to play the job through the MSQ and focused on starting to level BLM because it will be capable of doing them because of its strong single spell attacks. If you're trying to get through the main story line then I highly suggest something other then SMN to save yourself frustration. I really recommend BLM over SMN for questing just because of how quickly you can burn through mob hp where as SMN requires time to ramp up its damage. Give it a try and see if you like the job.
I only have to do Heavensward MSQ is all until Stormblood.
I started as CNJ then meddled with BRD, and NIN dedicatingly while leveling other jobs in between. It wasn't until sometime late last year that my calling is with PLD; mainly all three tanks.

He issue with Blm isn't messing up rotation, but an AOE that you have to dodge messing with keeping Enochian up.
It's the sole reason why I'm thinking about leaving BLM for SAM.
I ended up with Arcanist at 21 going through PoTD. It's fun but a grind even though easy.
