Unfortunately the very core of the Armoury System prevents that - this is not like FFXI where Job class and weapon were completely separate (and thus a Job could often use multiple types of weapons), in FFXIV's Armoury System your weapon is your class, it's identified by it's weapon or tool. One-handed wands and shields for CNJ/WHM and THM/BLM was a holdover from the original version of FFXIV where shields were actually a seperate sub-class called 'Sentinel' (or SEN for short) - CNJ and THM could equip the SEN class and gain skill points for the class but only GLA could make use of it's abilities.

This changed when 1.0's battle system and classes were redesigned for the introduction of Jobs, SEN as a specific class was scrapped and it's abilities given to GLA/PLD by default, shield use became classless, but THM and CNJ could still equip certain types of shields.

I'm pretty sure Yoshi wanted to move away from single handed wands and shields for THM/BLM and CNJ/WHM (shown by high level THM/BLM and CNJ/WHM weapons being almost solely two-handed) so it's even more telling that SE are rather committed to sticking to the 'one weapon type per class' concept I'm afraid.

The change to two-handed exclusiveness was originally more a system thing. Prior to one of the first patches of Heavensward they couldn't really pair drops together. Sword/Shield and Wand/Shield combos would end up with parts dropping independent of each other. This actually made a fair amount of mess during leveling and 2.0/2.1 progression.

Right now they could start giving BLM and WHM wands/rods and shields, but I think they have chosen to hold off in order to give them more room for future class design.

Its a good idea to remember that originally Gladiator and Paladin used 3 "different" weapon types: Daggers, Macuahuitl and Swords. Daggers were changed to Swords in 2.4 so that Daggers could be exclusively Rogue/Ninja weapons.

Yeah, it'd be nice to have more variety in weapon and especially the weapon animation, or perhaps have existing ones more customisable. I think they would say it is too much work though..

I wish we had this to be honest.

    Hate me all you want.
But in FFXI i had a blast equipping whatever weapon i want. That Naginata Polearm was so dope on Samurai for Bird parties, until you got Amanomurakumo!
And i wish so much, that we could use a Naginata on Samurai, additionally - not instead - to the Katana.

I don't think Balancing would even be an issue, just make them the same stats really.
It's more of a... "okay, now we need to make new stance/auto-attack animations, possibly new skill animation that detect which weapon type you have equipped,
and if you want them to be seperate and have one of each for every primal etc., then it's instantly twice as much art design work.

What.. I could see them actually implement, is weapon glamours that are unique weapons. But making this work with current animations might be tricky or limiting too.

actually that is the one thing FF11 got right, almost ever FF that had a jobs system had weapon variations for every job except for a small few like bard or dancer. The major ones that didnt were everything from 7 uo with 12 and noctis being the exception it seems
Furthermore the class system was originally designed for the exact oppositte purpose, but when they added jobs in this game they had to limit what one could do, by naking the class system less useful.
MAYBE when they eliminate the class system entirely, they could do this, but I feel like at this point it would require too many resources to be worth it
