I think that is the idea, $1 for a character and 1$ for each retainer it comes with, Im pretty sure you will also be able to purchase additional retainers as well for a buck each.
I have 2 characters on the same account; 1 is battlecrafts, the other is DoL / Crafting and both are quite full with all the items I need>< haha. I wouldn't mind a cheaper price on character slot. That being said, I don't mind paying the $3, it's like... skip having a take-out lunch once a month which is hella easy!
Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means
Agreed and consider this. At this day the economy is already bad. Tomorrow it will be worse. After billing it will be non existant. Try looking for those uncommon materials to make this item or to make that extra skillup.Pfft, an episode? there's a whole season of FFXIV hoarders dedicated to me!
also, it's not just $3 for an additional mule, at minimum you'll require to have a separate account, which means it's another $9.99 per month if you want to have a mule.
Why another account you say? well, unless you have figured out a way to transfer items between different characters on the same account.... :P
and no, having a friend or ls member serving as a intermediary doesn't count, not only is it a huge inconvenience to both you and your friend by doubling the amount of trading needed to be done (who may reconsider being your friend after your 48th request for transferring stacks and stacks and stacks and stacks of items..), it is also unreliable at best, as you may not always find people to serve as a virtual deposit box when you need one.
Simple fact you wont find it.
All you will see in the markets is the basic ores and logs, apart from some even more pricier equipment.
I can see starting equipment being charged at 200-500k for level 20-30 gears, why simply because all the "Hoarders" deleted their mules and you no longer can buy it all at wards. Also I wont be able to supply the most random stuff to LS members anymore because I'll have a strict policy if it isnt worth anything it goes back on the ground.
EDIT: also try running different battle classes and crafting at same time.
Inevntory Space Used:
10-30 (Weapons with different materia, maybe even up this to 20-40 with dark moogle)
30-50 (Armour this is for a casic set of armour, with only one materia combination)
10-20 (Crafting tools)
10-20 (Crafting Armour)
10 (One single set of materials) x number of recipes you would like to make
20-30 (Event related items) - Sure you can dump these if you want
20-30 (clear inventory space) so you can make some items
Whats the total so far.. 200.. Well guess what your out of luck. Thats all your inventory space used.
Now cough up that extra $3 per month + Basic Service Charge (Until you can relaiably send items to other characters) for the character or you cannot indulge in any extra crafts than one.
Simply put there is not enough space to say you can do anything without extra.
This thread was never about saying I'm not prepared or willing to pay extra for the characters or retainers.. But $3 IS TOO MUCH!
Lets look at the Post 1.20 pricing when no further discounts are applied I'd be looking at $12.99x2 $3x2 ($32 per month) just for 2 accounts with 2 characters each to have enough.
SUPER EDIT: People keep using the argument of FFXI people had mules.. YES they did because only 1 character can have a single craft above the 60 level cap. This meant if you wanted all crafts you needed 8 characters..
What happens when FFXIV introduces the same restrictions on high end crafting. You will be forced to purchase 8 characters at $3 for a grand total of $37 per month. And this would be just to maintain your crafts. Let's see all you whiners out there say $3 isn't much to pay then.
And let's face it this will and already has progressed exactly the same as FFXI, they will slowly raise the level cap, adjust skill levels and set caps for jobs.

Three bucks is three bucks. I make that in my sleep, its not even a matter of principle it's just an additional slot so won't bother me.
well, it's official now, there will NOT be any way whatsoever for players to purchase additional retainers until 2.0 at the earliest. The only way now to to obtain additional usable inventory is to by at least doubling your subscription cost by opening another account.
gg SE
By the way, when we all originally signed up to play this game, SE made it clear that each additional character would be $3 and each additional retainer would be $1. So while I understand they allowed us to play 'free' for awhile, it seems silly to whine about paying for something you always should have paid for.
Tossing my 2 cents in here then walking away lol.
Sure, I'd like the $3 per extra character to be less. but it's reasonable. I plan on paying for the 6 months in advance, to make up for cost. I've played since day one, so I don't see that changing lol. And your first character (main character w/e) is free people. You don't pay $3 extra for your main character.
"The above price plan includes a save slot for one character and the 30 day basic service fee."
And I really do wish they could give us the extra retainers for $1 (hell, I'd pay more!) but I can understand that it's not their highest priority right now. I've been working on getting rid on my 5 mules since they announced 2.0 and that p2p is coming. I'm down to 1 now, and I'm ok with that. And we might get lucky and get some sort of extra storage in our housing, that would be awesome, but I'm not depending on it.
If you don't like it, feel free to get rid of your mules. Get to work, you have a month to get it done.
