No thanks, I'd like to keep a certain bear as far away from eorzea as possible, kthnxbai.

That's not a fault of SE though, if SE made a system for their game, they are making the system for the in-universe definition of a Lalafell, which is a short-stature adult being which can happen to look childish when made to in a certain way.
So as far as SE is involved, Lalafell are adults. So yes, as far as this situation of Lalafell being children is involved, it's the playerbase at fault... which is quite unfortunate.
♥ Baby, tell me, what's your motive? ♥
How about a Roe named Convicted Lalaphile? https://m.imgur.com/a/w8zsn#YlmMVKV
I loled when I found that ages ago.

Didn't the recent Christmas event also taught us that children Lalafells are the same size as the adults? Meaning you wouldn't be able to tell the difference of their age solely on their appearances.
That is correct. Lalafell children are the same size as the adults.

According to the lore, only lalafells are able to discern the age of other lalafells.
Back to the original point, wouldn't it make more sense just to do the whole "student/apprentice" thing with a chosen retainer? When you think about it, that's already a thing anyway since their max level can't be higher than your max level of whatever job or DoL class the retainer is, and we can already gear them up. The only thing missing is an incentive to focus on that further into things like stories and so on.
I'm not against the idea of adoption. I think it's a cute idea, and I'd probably do it if it were added to the game. I gotta note, though, that these kids have lost their parents once already, and now their new guardian is the Warrior of Light, who is basically on the front lines against some of the worst threats facing the world. Gotta wonder what that would do to the poor kid, psychologically, knowing that their new mom or dad is nigh-constantly on the brink of death. Or, perhaps the reverse might be true - whatever killed their original folks would likely hardly even be a threat to the WoL. Killed in an Amal'ja raid? WoL can go slaughter every living thing in Zahar'ak in roughly five minutes. There might be comfort in knowing that your new parent is as tough as they come.
As for the pedophile concerns, most likely these children won't be something you can parade out in public, like minions. You'd only see them in private areas, like inns and such, where others can't see you. I'm not too concerned with what folks decide to do in private. If they get their jollies molesting their virtual child where no one can see it happening, that's fine by me.
I don't disagree at all. I just don't feel like giving the playerbase more opportunities to engage in that kind of conduct is conducive to the image of the game, the company, and the playerbase. That's not a fault of SE though, if SE made a system for their game, they are making the system for the in-universe definition of a Lalafell, which is a short-stature adult being which can happen to look childish when made to in a certain way.
