I don't understand why people think Healing and Tanking are difficult. They really aren't. I consider DPS to be the most difficult role to play optimally. DPS classes are so complex and difficult that SE has recognized it themselves. Control wise, Tanks and healers are MUCH easier to play than DPS. Button bloat is also a rising issue.

They've already said that they're going to be toning down the rotations a bit for SB AND they've already had to tone down the raids in order to compensate for these rotations that DPS players have to work with.

That being said, that's how I feel about DPS jobs.

What class people choose to play or not play is less about the complexity of it all IMHO, but moreso around the scrutiny that people perceive tanks and healers to be under if something goes wrong - especially for new people entering the game. Doesn't matter if the DPS stood in every orange circle imaginable and ignored every mechanic, you let them die and you might feel like it's your fault as the healer. Doesn't matter if you lost aggro on 1 mob for a bit due to an overeager DPS blowing it's load too early, you might feel like it's your fault as the tank.

People will often say 'I want to take it easy, so I'll go as a DPS' when in reality a poorly played DPS can harm the party more. Tanking/healing in this game is not the hard or stressful, in all honesty.

However, I see more people snapping at a green leaf paladin if they struggle with learning the basics of tanking and holding aggro with their lack of tank stance then I see people complaining about a green leaf arcanist who completely ignores all their dots and just spams ruin. Neither is okay, but from what I've seen in game, it's more acceptable to call out a bad tank or healer than a poor dps.

I think there is more consistent pressure to perform decent as a tank/healer, but that if you were comparing each job's difficulty at max perfection then DD would be harder; however, I don't see very many DD doing that.

I'd say on average Tank/Healer is harder because they are consistently put under duress, meanwhile if you choose to shine as DD you may (although not everyone may notice it lol). Not that everyone playing perfect is easy per say, tank/healer's ease in playing perfect relies on each other - the cd/proper load sharing makes each other's jobs really easy to do well (or impossible ;D). Meanwhile DD have all their positional mumbujumbo.

Awful tank/healer extremely noticeable compared to awful DD, and their jobs are very front and center for most content in terms of being able to notice if they're doing it right or not. DD have some checks, that get more noticeable later in the game but its not that often for normal content.

I must say I'm the opposite. I find tanks and healers more enjoyable because they're much more reactionary. Something goes wrong, as tank/healer you have to see it and adapt. DPS I find is usually just playing the dance routine of buttons, which I don't enjoy. I think most people prefer to be able to play to a routine though rather than having to be ready to react to when it hits the fan. They just keep trucking along.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

    Here is:

    DPS
    • learn its rotation
    • burn mobs
    • being watchful of aggro
    • perfect knowledge of mechanics
    • leave commends

    HEALER
    • being geared for healing tank pulling the whole map
    • make sure no one dying
    • perfect knowledge of mechanics
    • know he will be blamed for anything goes wrong
    • leave commends

    TANK
    • being geared for the duty
    • know what to aggro, when to aggro
    • know what not to aggro
    • keep. aggro. always.
    • know he will be blamed for anything goes wrong

The reason there are more DPS compared to healers and tanks is pretty simple. They're the only role which if held accountable for not doing their job correctly, can get the person that's complaining about their performance banned.

SE will not ban someone for kicking a tank that can't hold aggro.

SE will not ban someone for kicking a healer that can't keep everyone alive.

But SE will ban/suspend your account because you kicked someone for low DPS and they reported you for it.

It's very unfair to say the least.

Because of this, I think most people look at DPS as the "fuck it" role and know they can play however they want without hearing others complain about their lack of performance (which is a HUGE problem with DPS in this game). It doesn't come with the pressure of having to play well so more people flock to DPS vs tanks/healers I think.

I don't think that is true OP. The final fact is, DPS is just fun to play. If you love playing a DPS class then that is what you want to play and who cares if the wait times are long. If you don't like the play style of any tanks or healers available then you aren't going to go tank or heal.

No, let's be honest here. The real reason we have more DPS than Tanks or Healers is because we've had a community that not only allows, but constantly encourages people to play at an absolutely terrible level so that they can get carried by the rest of their team, and it's absolutely impossible to be lazy when you are a tank or a healer.

95% of the DPS I meet in Duty Finder put in so little effort that it's somewhat appalling, it's a big reason that I don't tank anymore. If I, as a tank, were held to their standard, instances would be nigh impossible.

That's also why they need Damage abilities for solo play - Because they are useless at their core. Damage is what matters, all that matters. And people subconsciously pick on, hence they prefer playing DPS.
DPS are forced into the genre with bloated HP pools in enemies and artificial "deal x damage or wipe" mechanics. Just see all those discussions that sparked during Gordias and DPS checks - one of the most common reasons for DPS checks is that "or else people would go with only tanks and healers".

In fact, I'd say that the genre would be more interesting without DPS. Tanks relies on healers, healers relies on tanks, there's an obvious synergy there. DPS? You have no way nor/or need to help tanks or healers, you just do your own thing like in a single player game.
