I think you could even make some of the cute races pretty badass - like Miqo'te lion (slightly bigger, maybe larger teeth, bushier thicker tail, bit more hair, stronger face lines) and especially the Au Ra I think has high opportunity, I don't mean to say they look bad now but I mean like aggressive war torn and ready for blood. I would be quite pleased with just more options to our current set~I strongly prefer expanding on the races that we have with more options and tribes. Between Roegadyn, Highlander and Aura, there is plenty of scope for less cute and more mean/dark/less pristine looks. For that matter, Miqo'te (especially male) could easily have a less perfect look with more character options and face types.
Putting a lot of effort into another playable race would be a waste IMHO as it would only help the small minority of players hyped to play whichever race that is. While upgrading character customization and adding more tribes/options within the existing races potentially benefits every player in the game - which seems a much more effective use of the development time and effort.
Maybe a sort of Blizzard Raynor/Tychus space marine build for Highlander or Roe (basically if they added to the muscle slider not only a skin texture but an actual bulk slider that affects the 3d model's scale in specific areas). Would like to note that new options doesn't mean just rough stuff, I'm sure you assumed I meant that too but I wanted to say it out loud lol - this wouldn't just be a "mean, dark" pass at the system but it could help a lot in terms of visual diversity ^_^.
I defintiely heartly agree about your argument on effectiveness of the dev time. You have to do a lot for a new race, all the lore, new characters, entirely different looks, unique changes, its a quick pass through the entire game just to make sure you did it nicely lol. I don't think SE's race choices are so unique that adding new races would be as hard as in other MMOs that have more unique looking races, but.. its still a truck full of kupo nuts of work I'm sure. And besides, if the first major gripe is the races don't have enough fun options.. adding more would silence that
So yeah, I agree if they were going for time effective changes revamping our current system and choices could be an excellent task.
for what it is worth, when they do "add" a new race, viera is a likely candidate. Yoshi wanted to make something "beast like" but most he managed to get accepted around the office was au ra. So that being said doubt he will go with the "i want a beast looking race" thing again since he probably wont want to bother with it. (Ugly races just don't fly well in Japan apparently) That said though, he is probably in no rush to add another race, so maybe for 5.0 XD (and personally would rather get more customization to current races)
The player base is never going to get everything it wants, when it wants it. However comma we have just about gotten everything we've wanted thus far:
Want to have a house? Done
Want to get married? Done, elaborately.
Rogue/Ninja? 2.4
Flying? Swimming? Heavensward. Stormblood.
Samurai? Red Mage? 2 more months
Haurchefant portrait? Yoshi P himself said "You want it? You got it."
Dyeable Coil Gear? Took long enough, but 3.2.
"Make the Crystal Tower raids relevant again!" - Anima Aether Oil step.
Buy a mount with tokens? Forum idea, literally made it into the next big patch.
As far as Viera are concerned, there's a big enough demand that they've made concepts. For males. For a short variant. They've put time and effort toward it, even if it didn't make the cut right away, or a different option was chosen first.
tl;dr: Be patient. We've gotten nearly everything we've wanted so far. I don't see this being any different.

To be fair, Nin was meant to launch with 2.0 but was pushed back, so I don't think that counts. Unless that was something being requested from 1.0, which I'm not sure of. Didn't spend much time on the forums back then.
But yes, fully agreed on the be patient part. It'll be interesting to see what they have in store for us when they do decide to add a new race. Be it Viera or something else. ^^
Oh I only meant it in that there was a big demand for it, even from the dev side. I recall Yoshi P saying (on the topic of new jobs) he was most interested in Rogue or Ninja at the time, as were a lot of others. (The demand for DRK, SAM, and RDM was there too, but again, not everything we want, when we want it.)
I'd be more inclined to see Beastmen added. Maybe not the current ones, since that'd probably conflict with a number of issues regarding lore/MSQ and model animation. Thinking about it, even Au Ra were fairly meh in the long run.
Bangaa would probably be kinda cool to see, far moreso than Viera, IMO. I mean, I'm all for more cute/attractive races and all that, but I'd prefer to see a wider range of diversity between looks at this point. I guarantee the Viera face would be pretty damn close to human, akin to Miqote ones. So unless they actually made it more animal-like, I'd say let's just forgo that for now and aim for something actually different. It doesn't always have to be about potentially physically (or sexually) attractive standards.

Roll an Elezen, get bunny outfit with MGP. That's basically what Viera will be.
Not that I'm against them adding new races, quite the opposite. But we already have the tall, lanky, sexy race in the Elezen (which is the best race in the whole game anyway, it's been scientifically proven by scientists in a science facility using the scientific method, but I digress). I believe the devs once said that for a new race they would want to add something legitimately different from what we now. There was a concept art a while ago of a wolf like race:
Now THAT is what we need in my opinion, something uniquely distinct from the other races. Not that I would play ever play it, but I think you get my point.
honestly it, the few artwork they have shown was quite different of what we have into the game, even the FF12 viera are extremely different of the one we have into the game. The game designers have deemed it too similar. Your opinion differs, but that doesn't mean they are calling you stupid. Politely request they revisit the idea and show your support if it's something you would like. Personally I'd like to see another short race (small plump viera maybe?! YES!).
right now for the women we lack the sensual, sexy and mature type. and for the man it was possible to make something more smaller they have tons of way to do it... the fact to have rabbit ear don't make it similar of the miqote because the aura instead to have beast ear have horn...
they have said no beastmen type mostly because of armor trouble... plus if you make an ugly race they often tend to be the least played in every mmorpg. people want something pleasing to look... or appealing.I'd be more inclined to see Beastmen added. Maybe not the current ones, since that'd probably conflict with a number of issues regarding lore/MSQ and model animation. Thinking about it, even Au Ra were fairly meh in the long run.
