I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting seriously in this thread, but whatever.
So I checked out official screen shots for games such as TERA and Rift, as well as some gameplay vids for both, and I've gotta say, while there are some interesting aesthetic variations and scenery, the claim that FFXIV's graphics can't hold a candle to them is bullocks. Sure the aesthetic design might be more appealing to those who want the "Dragon Age" D&D take on MMOs with big hulking ogre things and lots of hard edges, but that's just aesthetic design, and has nothing to do with graphics.
A few more pieces of grass here and there isn't game changing. Tera definitely has some cooler vistas, and looks much less of a WoW clone than Rift, but the gaudiness in character and gear design that pervades most korean MMOs is still prevalent and still a huge turn off for me personally. A lot of the vistas in Tera look like stuff we got in Aht Urgan, Promathia, etc. There isn't anything to say we won't get some mind blowing awesome stuff(and I still think stuff looks great now) later on down the road, but in terms of actual graphics, FFXIV is in the lead, hands down.
That isn't to say anything of the gameplay, which this thread isn't about.
Anyway, that's my peace. I'm out.
Just as a point of interest if anyone has watched any of the Videos that were released prior to the game? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEybd...el_video_title) most models are crafted from digital clay and then they give it a normal map and reduce the poly-count to give a more detailed model in game.abriel, World of Warcraft released in 2004. Not only that but the graphics in that game look retarded. FFXIV is supposed to have world-class graphics.
FFXI looks better than this game. Sure it has low res textures and polygons, but all FFXIV did was increase polygons and add ugly bump mapping. Lighting and shading makes a WORLD of difference.
I'm also fairly certain that if people could actually run at full settings (like me and probably only 10% of the community can) then there would be a lot less complaining. They are working on reducing the system strain though so you'll have to wait for that.
I see no problem with any of the textures, mapping or otherwise. Boats look great, water is superior to just about every other that doesn't specifically focus on the water graphics. Light reflects off the surface and from different angles and I can tell the ship is moving just fine when taking the boat trip.
Also have any of you seen what a stone city looks like? The whitewashed stone of Limsa looks more interesting than any stone building I've seen IRL. Just my opinion but I see no reason to complain about a game that does one of the best jobs in the graphics department and in terms of believability.
The water in Gridania is a lot better than anywhere else, duno if anyone else noticed that.
I agree the water on the boat is laughably bad and more akin to an oil slick.
That being said this has some of the best graphics and water in an MMO outside of Tera.
Beligianrofl live in FFXIV forums? where did he originate and who can stop him
isn't he from Belgium?
yes, you should go back to WOW since the gfx are so much much much better.Thank you for contributing such insight! Pretty much nobody likes the game at the moment. We're here to point discuss things that need to be changed to make this game popular. Right now, the rightly earned 49% meta score is deterring a lot of players.
All we're doing is pointing SE in the right direction towards making the graphics even better! Since you love FFXIV for its graphics, then wouldn't you love it even more if the graphics were even better?
Not my fault I make the best threads. I didn't bump this.
You can't have graphics as h igh as in a single player shooter because you can have a lot more polys on the screen in crowded places, unless you set the maximum number of models to a really low number.
