lol the character models look great, but thats not only issue here. Un-Game, Un-set, un-match lol. The character models aren't the whole game and 2 pics definately doesn't end anything.OMG is this topic still going on?
How much can Belgianrofl fail in a single day?

Final Fantasy XIV picture is not even on High settings, AKA Belgianrofl's point = Destroyed.
Game, set, match.

If they didn't want players to expect shadows and reflections don't add them to the cutscenes or game. It's just a tease. What about sitting at a table in adventure guild looking at leves with friends? or jumping around setting fires to a friends arrow? I haven't seen much that ties this game playability wise to what they tout in the opening movie. Do you heal your party members through the holes in their gear? Also in that scene notice the water and the reflections/shadows just to hammer home my point. I didn't make the game I just got tempted into it. But these seem like low-priority, easy problems to fix. Aside from the combat and armor systems which are already in re-development. I realize that the cs is far superior to what in game can accomplish but still, the difference is fairly extreme and GW2 has seemed to solve the issue of reflections at least. This is a valid point and a good one. I will cut SE some slack on the shading portion. Since they didn't design the game to have shadows originally, it would take a lot of work for them to implement them now when there are bigger fish to fry.
I hope they take the time in the future to add this effect. It will further futureproof this game beyond your wildest dreams!
I still stand firm that adding reflection to the water is a no-brainer, and light on the system resources.

^ going off of your point on the whole tricking us.... How dare they use nearly identical races to FFXI, tell us that FFXI players are their #1 priority, and telling us that FFXI players would want to remake their characters in FFXIV, and then make the game Completely different and disappointing to us. I'm offended, and am glad Tanaka got the fired.
Ya so far its been both horribly and refreshingly different to ffxi. Only time will tell if it'll pull through.^ going off of your point on the whole tricking us.... How dare they use nearly identical races to FFXI, tell us that FFXI players are their #1 priority, and telling us that FFXI players would want to remake their characters in FFXIV, and then make the game Completely different and disappointing to us. Silly obvious problems like this should not need priority lol. This sort of graphics been in games for years.Yea, all those should be fixed. They are not however the top priority ^^. I did have contests with my linkshell to see who guesses first that there was no light source for my shadow, since i was standing against a wall. and another where there was a lantern in front of me, yet my shadow was going towards that lantern lol.
Structure detail in this video is on par with what is shown in the Adventurer guilds in the cities. Sad part is I can hardly get 10-15fps in this area even with the graphics detail turned down to 1. How ridiculous is that?! At this level the graphics are so pixelated it's not worth playing.I, too, would like to see evidence that the tech demo isn't pre-rendered.
I've looked all over Youtube and haven't found anything beyond this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgtZvn5c4e4
The photograph used for comparison in the original post seems to have been taken from this cinematic.
Did the addition of the graphics settings give you better fps in most areas? yeah it did! But they still have alot more work to do to make it work on more systems. I know it can be better because I've had a full 30fps in wide open areas. I don't have a stellar system, but the inconsistent framerates is bothersome.
It just doesn't make sense.
Right now I think the Developers focus are on other things besides graphics. I do agree that the graphics could be better when it comes to water. And I believe this game engine can do it.
but FFXIV needs content more than anything else! More quests, more areas, more dungeons. I love FF and Square Enix to death! But they released this game too soon.
LoL at that one - just LoLWorld of Warcraft Water
Just because a game has a lot of character models, doesn't mean the graphic technology has to be archaic like FFXIV's is. SE's proprietary engine is so poorly optimized that it makes games run a lot worse than a modern engine like Unreal or Source.
Practicality over eye candy.
Guild Wars did it easily with water reflections on mid range hardware and intend on doing it again with Guild Wars 2. thats just a pc game i know but atm so is this. The graphics in FFXIV are great for what they are, graphics of a MMO world, superior in this genre. While not being able to match texture details and effects of a modern single player fps game i think square enix' engine is amazing. You should also keep in mind this is a multi-platform title and not solely optimized for PC hardware - one reason why its already so demanding. Crystal Tools is build to be highly portable, they wanted to run the game on PC, Playstation 3, maybe Microsoft's Xbox360 at a later time and even Linux and Apple OSX clients are not out of question. If they add super realistic water reflections or whatsoever nobody could run it.
Game-set-matchlol the character models look great, but thats not only issue here. Un-Game, Un-set, un-match lol. The character models aren't the whole game and 2 pics definately doesn't end anything.
Cause you ppl actually TRY to hang on details to find a reason to bash the game instead of stop playing it.
If you're gonna complain about the water in FFXIV then Ill complain about the caracters in other MMOs.
If you're gonna complain about the shadows in FFXIV I'll complain about the lack of detail in about everything else in any other MMO.
You talk about details, I talked about major stuff like your whole damn character.
FFXIV lacks serious basic stuff like keyword search in retainers, or mounts, or mail system, or working stats, or working hate and battle system, or content for that matter and people like the OP worry about petty details that can be worked around after FFXIV starts making sence gameplay wise.
Do you really think that right now is the time for S-E to focus on these petty details and not in actual gameplay aspects?
I for one do not, and that's the main reason why I am completely against this topic.
In a few words: I don't give two s**** if they ever fix shadows or water, what's curently there works fine as long as they fix the stuff I already mentioned.
