Not a lot of detail? Have you ever zoomed in and looked at your character or enemies? There's a tremendous amount of detail on almost everything, except the bottoms of your shoes. They got a good engine and graphics but it is lacking details... everything, from the details, the texture mapping.. feels exactly like the game itself, half-baked and rushed out the door.
WOW's graphics may not be on par with FFXIV but their amazing level of detail makes the graphics much more enjoyable to look at and brings the whole world to life. It's not all about the polygons... the details is what truly makes good graphics stand out.
the engine cant display a lot of characters at a time and still needs one of the best rigs available... its just lazyness, bad optimization (another example is all the ugly alpha textures - bushes etc.). They could make awesome water animations...LOL @ comparing single player FPS games (whose engine needs to display a LOT less characters and models on screen than a MMORPG) with a MMORPG. Or even more the graphics of a MMORPG with that of a prerendered tech demo.
Ever wondered why every single MMORPG has graphics engines that seem to be behind the times of several years?
The graphics are so lackluster that they're the best in the MMORPG market, currently and foreseeable.
Limsa cries for nice wateranimations, the cliffs... etc... but don't look at the waterfalls in gridania... its jelly. It doesnt look like water at all.
World of Warcraft Water
Just because a game has a lot of character models, doesn't mean the graphic technology has to be archaic like FFXIV's is. SE's proprietary engine is so poorly optimized that it makes games run a lot worse than a modern engine like Unreal or Source.

To be fair, though, WoW completely redesigned the water effects just before Cataclysm. So they were able to give it some real attention.World of Warcraft Water

Before Cata, for years, they were horrendous.
I think FFXIV's water effects are just fine.

Ah, another entry-level troll to block.

He's a well-known troll who sits in Ul'dah all day b****ing about FFXIV and praising WoW. He also has an alt named Warcraft Cataclysm that sits at camp broken water to sign up for Behest. He's level 1, but he does this to grief players by taking up a slot of the Behest.
I really don't know why people even bother talking to him anymore. Too bad we can't make a sticky to let everyone know to ignore him.
First off, I never praise WOW. I hate WOW for its contribution to the degradation of society. He's a well-known troll who sits in Ul'dah all day b****ing about FFXIV and praising WoW. Second, Warcraft Cataclysm is *Not* me. To be honest I have no idea who that guy is. I never go to camp broken water. I never leave Uldah, Blackbrush, Drybone or Horizon.
Third, I have proof that i am not Warcraft Cataclysm: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...4255#post64255
Why is it unfair to compare water from FFXIV to Wave Race 64?
