Even when they do add cross-server friends, I don't expect things to change much. Talking might pick back up for a little while, but I feel like it'll go back to mostly silent runs after the novelty ends. WoW has had xserver friends and grouping (and you can even play in the open world with them) for years, and it's still almost always completely quiet in dungeon finder content. I think that's just the nature of farm/grind content when running the same 15-minute dungeon for the millionth time. It was generally the same on swtor too (where dungeons were server only) unless you played on an RP server, and even then I can remember lots of groups where no one said anything at all except SKIP CUTSCENES/STORY WITH SPACEBAR PLS.

People just want to get the daily grind out of the way and move onto other things. Also the whole GCD system/spammy nature of most mmo combat now just doesn't leave a lot of time to talk.

I usually do the typical {Hello!} and stay quiet the rest of the Dungeon unless someone has a question on how mechanics work or something.

Well, cannot ask everyone doing chit-chat, but isn't it quite gloomy? When I do duties with fc mates we talk a good number of times and will end them nicely and timely anyway.

Are your runs that way? Do you prefer run silently but with maxed efficiency? Am I wrong?
It's difficult to type while focusing on the run, rotations, heals etc. You can stop to chat, but potentially be a detriment to your team and most people want in and out, as the content is often designed that way (as stated by Yoshi).

It would be great if there was an in-game voice chat app.

I always start with a "Hello!" and a "Thanks for run!" at the end. If someone is new I try and give a quick description on mechanics pre-pull too.

If everyone is really chatty/having fun then I try to join in, but I find it difficult to talk and fight at the same time and not die.

I tend to greet the party in the beginning, but unless spoken directly to or asked about mechanics, just keep to myself. Why? I'm actually not great at multitasking, so I like to focus on what I'm doing. I don't have much time to talk on my MNK or MCH if I mean to actually output some respectable damage for the party.

Sometimes between pulls I'm talking in FC/LS, or with my husband who is in the room. Some people just aren't chatty for any number of reasons. Either way, I wouldn't take their "silence" to heart or as any offense.

My FC and I can be quiet chatty outside of dungeons, but we know there's a time and place for talking. We stay normally quiet in dungeons unless someone needs to say something pertaining to the dungeon. Cos we know stopping to talk conversation could mean trouble. A missed AOE here, a missed heal or rebuff there. I like quiet runs since it lets me focus on the job at hand. Chatting at the wrong time can be a major distraction.

The only reason I don't talk much is the games a bit to "action" based for that.

A DPS says a joke in party chat >> I enter typing mode to reply >> AoE pops up right under me >> I scramble to dodge AoE >> 50/50 chance I dodge it >> more AoE's appear >> starting to lose enmity on a few side mobs cause I'm spending to much time trying to type and not enough tanking >> mobs finally dead, joke is a few minutes old and everyone else already commented >> need to pull the next set of mobs like 10 seconds ago or I'm going to slow and wasting everyone's time >> repeat again for 6-8 trash pulls and 3 bosses.

And that's a dungeon for me. So unless the healer D/C's, cause most groups will tell me to keep pulling with just 1 DPS, I rarely have the time to type anything without messing things up or making what should be a 15-17 minute dungeon take "twice as long".

As ironic as it maybe, but I'm rather anti-social. I'm typically not looking for a conversation in Duty finder, but simply looking to complete the duty. That's not to say I won't respond; if I feel it warrants a response I will, but I usually throw my greetings and farewells and that's the extent of it.
