I play on console and type all the time, including in the middle of fights. XD It doesn't take any more careful timing or effort than say... stance dancing does. I'll type less if I'm DPSing and need to keep up the damage, but when I'm healing or tanking, there is always time to shoot something quick into the chat... Being on PS4 has nothing to do with silence unless you don't have a keyboard at all or are just a really, really slow typist...

That said, I don't always talk in DF groups. I've been yelled at for trying to start a conversation before ("Stop distracting me and play the game blah blah!!") and since you don't know the people you're with, you have no idea what will interest them or what will just make them go :/ If someone put you in a room with three complete strangers and asked you all to complete a task that could be done in total silence, there's a 90% chance you wouldn't talk much to the complete strangers face-to-face either. It's a natural result of playing with people you don't know and will likely never see again.

Not really limited to this game. Any game with automatching systems are usually like this especially for easy pug content which is most of DF. More socializing usually occurs in premade groups usually for harder content. I do find that there is less zone chat in this game but of course it might be because there are no server-wide chat channels.

Outside of greetings, usually I'm quiet not because I'm on a console (definitely a PC user), but mostly because my multitasking skills pretty much stop right at the sequential level.

I'd rather have a quick and efficient run through the dungeon (constant skill usage no matter which role I'm on and continuous pulls), then talk with people I know after. If someone has to afk I might participate in small talk, but I'm not really comfortable talking with strangers, and can be fairly easily annoyed.

I play on Console myself and don't have much issue with it. SE did a good job as far as controls. Also if some aren't aware you DO have the option to play the PS4 Version of the game just like PC.. Plug in a USB Mouse/Keyboard, open your settings and switch the Control to Mouse/KB just like you would switch to controller on PC. Technically is gotten to the Point that Consoles are just Mini PC with Set hardware that cant be switched out until the next console upgrade.

And the fact that current MMOs are making the jump to Consoles (Example TERA Confirmed PS4 Google it, Wildstar/Black Desert/Bless Considering PS4/XB1), this is gonna be the norm soon because its really is a huge market (PS4 now 53M+ Consoles sold)that SE has had control of for years (FFXI). You can test this yourselves. next time your in game, examine someone random & if you see "Online ID" in the bottom right corner. Thats Console player, without it is PC. You'll usually see a lot of console players online unless PSN bombs lol xD

It's kinda weird how I treat DFs and PFs, lately.

Personally, I really dislike dungeons. I try my best to go through them as fast as I can so I can go do other stuff.

I come to dungeons to be efficient in my role (and get my tomestones.), not to be friendly. It's not really a place to do that, in my opinion.

PFs, on the other hand, yes. I do make the effort to be chatty and active. Mostly because I lead a few Wonderous Tails runs every week. But, I need to let people know that I am active. Also Trials are super fun and quick. So, I don't mind them at all.

I play on PC, with a keyboard and mouse, yet I seldom chat if I don't have to or there's downtime (like waiting for Cid to get a move on in Castrum).
I'll drop a greeting at the start of the run, I'll say goodbye at the end of the run if there's anyone not immediately leaving the party.
If there's a need for talking our tactics over I will. If I'm new to an encounter I'll take the time to let my party know I might need some pointers.
If I can reply with one of my macros, hotkeyed emotes, a single word or otherwise keep it short you'll get a reaction out of me.
At any other time I'll remain silent because I can either play the game or stand around chatting - I can't do both at the same time.
All the while I'll be talking about everything and nothing on VoIP if I can find an unfortunate victim to subject to my inane banter.

I say a lot of puns, and spam the "Happy" emote for my miqo'te that makes a really high-pitched squealing sound. It gets a response, good or bad

The Duty Finder is a means to an end for the most part, and that extends to the people you get grouped with. Its a quick resource to get things done, not to have a chat. Yeah, people can talk to each other and such but the majority just want to clear whatever it is they queued for and move on. Especially since beyond the first run or two of something, everyone should know what to expect so we go through the motions. Every. Time. Not even the revamped Diadem gives much reason to communicate. Chase FATEs, maybe mark the map for which FATE is next...

As already mentioned somewhere, the dungeon/battle model of FFXIV is not very in-fight chat friendly. Once you get started, people are starring at status/health bars, positionals, floor AoEs, cooldowns, etc. No real time to chat if you aren't lazy auto-piloting. And by the time everything dies, there's no reason to chat in-between groups of mobs unless someone does something somebody doesn't like.

To add to those, the chances of you ever seeing any of these people again are slim to none, so no point making an impression or getting attached to anyone since they're probably not on your server (unless you are actively looking to leave yours). Sure, "hello" and "thanks/goodbye" are etiquette, but I've been in way more DF runs where nobody says a thing than at least everyone has spoken once.

It's just the byproduct of "I don't have time to wait, need things now" phenomenon these days that the DF is adhering to.

You know, the most communication I've had to do via DF on a regular basis was the Halloween haunted house event. I legitimately enjoyed it even on my 10th run or so.
