I would like some friends. :)

New play to FFXIV, currently level 34 Summoner on Shiva server. Pretty new to MMO's, the only one I played properly being Guild Wars 2 but I only played it for PvE (solo, mostly). I like FFXIV, but feel as if I'm missing out a ton not being high-level and playing in a group.

So, who wants to be my friend?

I'm not on your server but I can offer some friendly advice.

Please take anything I say as a personal opinion and not objective fact.

You aren't missing out on anything by not being high level. You will however miss out on the very thing that makes FFXIV a great game if you rush through the story. While people's opinions of the story's quality may vary, ultimately this game's strongest selling point is the vast and ongoing story.

While I have multiple classes at 60, I have an RL friend who recently came to the game. He reached level 21 on Arcanist (his highest class) just this past evening. I've been doing things with him even though our levels vary greatly. I imparted things I learned on my own when I first came to the game and knew no one. First and foremost, above all else, focus on the Main Story Quests (or MSQ's for short). The main story quests aren't just the meat of the game, but they unlock a variety of important features such as your Retainers (which are you method of accessing bank space), access to a Grand Company, and your chocobo mount/companion. Now at 34 you likely already did that stuff, but even further into the game the MSQ's are important. You can't access Ishgard (and the three jobs added with Heavensward) if you don't complete all the ARR main story quests. And the thing is, no one can really "speed" you through that, even if they have max level classes. It's just the way the game is designed. Could someone help speed up your leveling? Maybe, but that won't really help you get to the max level content much faster because those MSQ's must still be completed.

What you can do however, is try to find a Free Company to join that have people you get along with. You don't need friends that are necessarily "high level", you just need friends. A Free Company is a good place to start trying to make some. It gives you access to people to socialize with, group up with, and possibly educate you on the finer nuances of the game or answer questions you have about specific issues you encounter. Often times, some Free Companies send out blind invites to anyone who isn't in an FC, I can't say accepting those is a good or bad idea, but if someone actually sends you a tell talking about their FC and asking you if you want to join, take the time to chat with them a bit and ask them questions about their goals and the type of environment the FC has. They might be focused on pvp, or endgame raiding. They could be purely casual and just run dungeons, farm old content, or focus on crafting. Or they could just be a mix of all of the above and more.

If you're playing and enjoying the story as you level, you most certainly are not "missing out" on anything. Whatever you think you're missing out on is going to be there when you get there so don't try to rush past all the amazing content along the way. FFXIV isn't like other MMO's where the game doesn't "start" till max level. In fact you're fortunate to be still new to the game. You have a veritable cornucopia of content ahead of you. All of the ARR stuff, and all of the HW stuff too. Those of us who are current with the main story have nothing to look forward to story-wise till June 20th, while you are lucky enough to have a metric ton of stuff to do till then.

So the best advice I can give is, don't rush. Enjoy the journey you're on. Enjoy the story you're not just taking part in like in most MMO's, but at the very center of. The story you're playing through is YOUR story. As far as the story is concerned, you're the hero and the rest of us are just other adventurers out there helping you out. Maybe someone from your server will post here and offer to invite you to their Free Company and guide you when you need help, and join you in dungeons, fates, and other content that syncs level. And of course the forums have quite a few friendly folk who can answer questions as well. Good luck!
