Also, as to the functionality and practicality of gear, our characters are exposed to every environment known to man and worse. There's really no such thing as a, outfit that will fit all the environments we're exposed to. A warrior type who spends a lot of time in a cooler or colder environment could definitely wear plate, sure, but a warrior that spent a lot of time in hot and humid environments would definitely prefer a kilt, loincloth or baggy comfortable pants to leather leggings and armored leggings. Sure, your legs might get scratched by long grass, but at least you don't get dehydration and exhaustion from trying to run across a field in the rain forest or desert.

I agree that high heels have no function, though, aside from making your legs look good. =P

To provide an example of what he/she means in one post (no offense, good sir/ma'am): My lala is a male who likes to go around in pink and look feminine. Issue is, we are cursed with pants, even our skirts have pants. Pants aren't terrible, but when it's all you have it gets boring. Also, the uraeus skirt SUCKS when it comes to dyeing. At one point, I used a fantasia to turn him female because I desired better choices in my wardrobe. It was certainly liberating, especially since I could use the dark nose feature and still consider my character as male while using female animations and clothes. But what ultimately drove me back was being called lass and other female pronouns. Couldn't stay immersed when I took up the fantasia only for the clothing, just because of the story referring to him as female when he was originally male. Now anytime I desire a fantasia and actually spend the 10 bucks to do so, I can't help but want to go back to male the same day.

I can see plenty of reasons why women would want to wear mens clothing, mostly because "mens clothing" is by far more practical than the female counterpart functionally. Hate to break it to people, but pants are better than dresses and kilts when running across the country side. Also, whoever invented high heels and thinks those made any lick of sense deserves punishment in the deepest, darkest depths of Gahenna.
Well I am not necessarily arguing for making the wedding dress available to males, but whether you would like to admit it or not, female characters have access to more items that are VERY flattering to their body shapes. Meanwhile, they create sets like the Shiva casting set which is perfect for females..... But not so much for males. It seems to be a bias towards the cute and sexy that is FEMALE-ONLY.

I don't know if equality is too much to ask for in the future?

It's too late and I'm too tired and tipsy to go in circles about why I'm doing this yet again. If you really want to know, read the top post, Colt, I feel like I explained my reasons pretty clearly.

Here's the royal coat from Labyrinth of the Ancients; I think it goes pretty well with the skirt!

Female without a doubt. Male and female lalafells share some animations, yet are mirrored...unless you also mirrored the image in which case you are pushing the guessing game to whole new levels of deviousness. Furthermore, the one thing about that dark nose feature I mentioned earlier is that it also is a tad darker than the male nose as well as having less pronounced outward coloration due in part to the female's nose being lighter and doesn't completely change when the dark nose feature is chosen (in short instead of a consistent color, it almost seems like a burn instead of something like a birth mark).

Subtle things, but you get an eye for it when you are constantly faced with the differences in appearance when it comes to clothing and other gender differences.

If you mean from a "lore" perspective, I wouldn't really be able to tell you, but then again no one would be able to tell you why it's lore-appropriate to tank in a bikini either and yet that's allowed by design.

From a player perspective, it's pretty easy: I'm a girl irl, and I like looking at dudes. I like looking at pretty dudes even more, but Square seems dead set on putting my alt in bulky cloth, tight leather or ugly plate. Actually contemplating "prettifying" my guy on my next few days off to repay the kind souls posting all the excellent eye candy in this thread, but we shall see. Not sure my guy can compare!

This exactly! And I'm sure your guy will look great, I look forward to seeing him!

Speaking of the Female Gaze, here's one of the times SE got the different models by gender thing really right:

I've been leveling Archer recently in PotD, and when I went through my retainers looking for level 44 gear so I could do some level-appropriate content, this was what I turned up. <3 Brings back happy(?) memories of Dzemael Darkhold and that last push to 50.

One of my retainers brought me this PvP top yesterday (Warwolf healing). It's yet another Bliuad model for healers, but in the most amazing semi-metallic dark blue and some nice extra details in bright silver.
