    Impossible Quests

I am trying to play the Quest "Fool me Twice" and I would like to know how a magic user is supposed to win against about 10+ enemies and one boss and the only other one fighting is that wimp Cid who basically dies right away and then the quest fails!

I noticed that every now and again there are quests that obviously are trying to send a message: " do not play a magic user" , "do not be a solo player" , "we have enough customers now so go away" etc.

I want to get my char ready to purchase "Heavenward " and I am level 47. Having gotten this far it really pains me to have to give up now. But this "Fool me Twice" quest is a story quest and I do not want to risk to just go on and purchase Heavenward and the next Expansion if it ends up that I cannot go on because I have not done this freaking quest. I am really disappointed, angry etc etc

All quests can be beaten by all jobs. It's just a case of reading the NPC dialogues during the fight, figuring out what to kill first, and using all the tools at your disposal. You're a BLM, so make sure you use Sleep a lot, and Manaward/Manawall.

I'm sure Cid can watch for himself, unless you make the magitek hit him with it's attacks. you sleep the the whole pack aswell. if i remember correctly, just kill the magitek while Cid holds the rest.

I dont even remember there being a fight during this quest, so i can say at least 1 BLM beat it without enough trouble to be memorable(and i definitely remember hating some specific instances that youve already gotten through to get to that point). So general tips, as i dont remember specifics.

As of level 36 your sleep spell is now an AoE - so 10 guys can quickly be cut to a manageable number of active combatants. Its still almost worthless in dungeons, but these solo fights(being a solo player doesnt matter at all, because you cant bring help into quest fights like this) are often 100% easier when you figure out who to put to sleep. NPCs are usually smart enough not to wake up sleepers, so just be careful not to toss any non-sleep aoes into the fray(fire 2, bliz 2, freeze) and that should help.

What does your rotation look like? A lot of BLMs miss an important change at level 40 that makes them much more efficient killing machines until it gets pointed out to them. The trait you got at level 40 allows for the 3rd astral/umbral stack. Fire 3 and Bliz 3 both grant you full stacks, and having a 3rd stack makes the opposite cast faster. What that means is that it no longer makes sense to cast down to no mana then transpose to ice to regen. Instead you should cast down until you have only enough mana for a bliz 3, then use that to instantly flip to full ice stacks for a quick 2 tick regen(meaning that being under umbral 3 gives you all your mana back in 3-6 seconds, depending on your luck with the server ticks - this is a good time to refresh thunder), followed by a fire 3 to flip back to full damage stacks and continue killing.

If there are more targets then youre comfortable handling then remember to use your buffs to get through some of them faster. Raging strikes is on a 3 min cooldown, so you should be able to use it more or less everytime you attempt the fight for a quick boost at the start.

If the NPCs are talking, they might be telling you who is the most important target to take out first. If not, i default to healers, then DPS, then tanks. If i need to protect someone i might kill DPS first, it depends on how the fight plays out. If the boss is hard hitting, get its attention and make sure that it points its attacks away from anyone you need to protect. You are smart enough to dodge aoes, npcs arent.

I took a quick peak, and your gear looks fine for your level(the bracelet is a little old, but an upgrade wouldnt be worth more then a couple points of Int, so no big deal). So... Basically, try to figure out what exactly is causing the failure state(healer npc keeping foes up too long? archer npc killing a target too fast? dozens of other potential things?) and experiment with different strategies to counteract the problem.

Oh, and yes. You absolutely must complete this quest to get anywhere with the expansion. The main storyline quests are the lock on the door to the expansion. You gotta beat them all to get your key.

Solo duties, if anything, teach you how to strategize and improve your job. There's some later on that make this one seem like a cakewalk. I mean they get hard. Also, consider your gear. I feel like the lv50 job quest was made to make people cry if they were still wearing the actual job gear.

This is a very important point, because some of the BLM job quests between 50 and 60 become nearly impossible as well if you don't Sleep some of the mobs while you kill stuff off.

I've gone through ARR on 4 jobs at this point: Bard, Black Mage, Warrior, and Dragoon so I can assure you all quests are clearable on BLM even if some are rougher than for other jobs.

There's some great advice in this topic already and I'll just echo the ones that worked for me:

    1. Pay attention to npc instructions. Usually they'll say something like I'll handle X, <your name> handle Y.
    2. Point targets you have aggro on away from the npc. The npc will not dodge aoes so you want to make sure as few are hitting them as possible.
    3. Prioritize kill targets. Enemy healers and mages tend to be high priority because they go down fast and can do high healing/damage.
    4. Use your job specific tools. As has been mentioned BLM has great abilities in its shields and Sleep. Cross-class Physick can help keep you up a bit at lower levels but becomes more useless the higher you go.

As a dps you are capable of killing things very fast. It can't hurt to look up information about your rotation to make sure you aren't missing anything that could help with efficiency.

The MSQ is still a long way to go before even getting to the point of entering Ishgard (aka HW) and from now on you'll be running in more of these kind of quests, especially the story line from patches 2.1 -2.55 can be overwhelming because there are so many, as well as frustrating if you're new to the game and are not used to that. Let me try helping you with the specific quest you've mentioned above and see if we can get you to clear it.

    1) Stay close to Cid - he will heal you when your hp falls under a specific threshold, however keeping an eye on your hp and having some HP pots can't be bad either.
    2) Dodge and watch out for the huge aoe circle that gets casted mostly underneath you every minute. You can easily avoid that with stepping out of the circle in time. If you have a lot of latency plan ahead.

    3) Focus on the healer first, he'll be in the back and is easily killed. If you don't do that, he will keep healing the troops and you might get overrun by them.
    4) After that, focus on the Magitek (that huge robot looking thing) and while it looks like this thing is much stronger, it can be easily killed as well, might need 3 or 4 casts instead of just 1 or 2.
    5) Again keep dodging the aoe's as well as staying in Cid's range
    6) a 2nd wave will appear, same thing here, kill the healer if there's any.
    7) kill the casters
    8) kill the melee
    9) there will be one more Magitek if you let cid hit that thing couple of times he will have the "aggro" on it and you would only have to dodge, but if you don't wanna wait that long, you can do it yourself just move to the left and right for the aoe and cid will keep you alive if you're close to him.

If all that fails, try ignoring both magitek's and focus on healer/caster/melee first and then move onto the M unit's. Either way, as long as you stay close to Cid and I can't stress that enough, you'll be healed by him and should have no problems getting through this quest. Just stay focused, don't panic and don't get frustrated and angry. FFXIV MSQ's are patience based keep that in mind lol. Let us know if you could successfully complete the story line. GL

I remember this quest frustrating me as a blm also. Theres a mechanic where cid says watch out for the magtieks laser canon thing can't remember the exact name. I do remember if u sdont do that mechanic correctly which i believe is dodging the aoe it wipes you over and over. Like the others said before me pay attention to what cid says and definitely utilize your aoe sleep. Hope this helps.

Actually I am not playing my Black Mage, I am playing my Mage/summoner i.e. the one that summons little helper rabbit and later the fire thing etc. Black mage just happens to be my avatar here on the forum. But thanks for all of the advice. I will go again AND I will know what to do when I take Black Mage through that section.
