Shields protect from certain other effects. For example, ever run through Mor Dhona with Stoneskin and without it and aggro the Nix? If you have Stoneskin on, not only do you take no damage, you don't get dragged to it. If you don't have Stoneskin on, you take a little bit of damage, and get dragged to the Nix.

No, I never asked for WHM to gain utility while AST lost healing potency. I never even asked for WHM to gain utility, I don't WANT them to gain utility similar to AST. It'll bring us closer to homogenization, which is something I really don't want.

Balance and homogenization are two very different things. What you're asking for - all healing potency and utility the same amongst all the healers- is homogenization.
What I'm asking for, WHM to specialize in healing but no utility and AST to specialize in utility but lower healing, is closer to what you can consider balance. It puts both healers on equal footing yet they both bring their own unique strengths. As I mentioned before, the reason why AST didn't work in 3.0 is because their buffs AND heals were weak. With their buffs being much more desirable now, it can still stand it's ground against WHMs higher healing.

That's what I feel SE was originally aiming for. WHM to be a safer and easier healer but offering no dmg bonus or utility while AST, still capable of healing content, would have a much harder time but offer these amazing buffs to push everyone forward.
That can now be realized with all the changes to ASTs toolkit, and I think it's worth a try instead of lazily giving WHM utility to even the odds.

Edit- I would like to say more but posting on these forums on mobile is EXTREMELY annoying. I hope I got my point across, that I'm not asking for WHM utility buffs at all, and that I want true Balance, not homogenization-

That shouldnt be the answer and you should be able to do any quest with any job which is what we have now.

If you get rid of Cleric stance and the ability to dps as a healer, who knows what kind of effects that can have to the game population as well as the healer population.
As I've said before, it is possible to make damage spells on WHM/SCH/AST scale with MND and adjust the pace of combat in dungeons/raids to where you won't have as many opportunities to deal damage since you'd be focusing on keeping people alive. Outright removing Cleric Stance would not necessarily make story completion impossible.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

What if, 'Overhealing,' was a mechanic? So say your Warrior has 50,000 HP. They're at 50,000, you slap down a Lustrate/Tetra/Whatever, and instead of the HP staying 50,000, it instead goes up to 65,000? It could make for an interesting mechanic in Boss Fights, beefing up the tank's health so they can take crazy damage. Or beefing up the party's health to take a big damage move. As for visually referencing it, the Green HP bar gets a pink/purple one over it. Double health? A Blue one.
    it actually is.

sch if they HQ adlo it pretty much is a stone skin. And that heal/shield is good at pulls for good damage mitigation.

look at gordias and skip soar.... that just made people want healers (and tanks) to dps more.

idk if i said it in this thread, but there was a guy me and my g/f met who stated healers only need to keep people @ 1% before death, anything else is over healing.

There's a discussion about this on the healer forums, and here's my reply from that discussion:

It's simply that it makes healer such a useful and powerful addition to the team, playing the job fully makes the run so much smoother, not to mention the healer DPS lessens the amount of damage taken by everyone and increases everyone else's DPS capacity (since the fights are shorter).

And for endgame content, I guess I love breaking my own records, trying to optimise my play more and more in a certain fight, and aiming for a higher ranking at FFlogs.
The reason I love playing a healer in this game is the versatility: I will heal, buff and DPS, I'm always active and I'm extremely versatile in supporting my party with all these tools.

Personally, my main role as a healer is to heal. And that's what I do. If the tank is mitigating damage well, and the dps are keeping out of aoe, THEN, and ONLY then, will I begin to DPS. But let's face it... as a WHM, I use up sh*tloads of mana using my dps abilities... mana that I like to have on hand for heals. And yes.. I do know how to manage my mana.. which is why I choose to mainly focus on healing and dps IF I can. Some tanks take a heck of a lot of damage and some dps refuse to move out of aoe *cough*BLM*cough*

I dunno about you people.. Few years ago if anyone said they wanted to play differently then what was deemed "the right way" people would attack them left and right. Now many of you want to play Healer as a different way and its now ok?
Yet if someone readies up as say a Class rather then a Job to help with buffs like Eye For and Eye, or something its unspeakable. Crossing dangerously close to hypocrisy.

What are you even trying to say? Your post doesn't make any sense.

Players are always expecting everyone to play their jobs the way they're meant to be played - no matter what job. It's about the most efficient way of playing a job. The way they're meant to be played is based on the current meta, which again is based on the game design: the available abilities, the battle design etc. In current meta, healers are expected to heal and DPS, tanks are expected to switch between tank and DPS stance, DDs are expected to use certain rotations to maximise their efficiency etc.

The requirement is the same for every player and it doesn't depend on your job: use your abilities in a way that's as efficient as possible in any given situation.
