Anyone feel like FFXIV wasn't supposed to a Final Fantasy game?

I am getting the feeling that FFXIV wasn't originally developed to be a Final Fantasy game and that somewhere down they line they figured they would sell more copies if they attached Final Fantasy to it.

It would go a long way to explain the lack of content as they would have had to strip back a lot of it and rework it to tie into a Final Fantasy theme and they probably just ran out of time in the run up to launch. I mean how could they release a Final Fantasy game without Chocobo's at launch they are one of the staples of the Final Fantasy series, yes they are coming but you would have thought they would have them ready for launch.

There is just something not quiet right with FFXIV, not for the amount of time it was in development anyway. At launch you basically had a hand full of story missions, Behest, Guildleves and grinding are pretty much the only things to do. Surely they couldn't have expected that to be enough to keep people occupied for the months to come.

What do you think, do you think it's possible this could be the case?

I remember a LONG time back, at some Vana'diel fest (or whatever it's called), there was an interview/panel where they mentioned something about a next gen mmo. And if I remember correctly, they were still deciding whether or not to give it the FF name, or Valkyrie Profile, or something else. So it is possible. I wish I could remember where that interview was.

I don't think it is the case. The graphics alone would have taken that much time. And though I (sadly) did not get to play FFXI, it seems to be reminisent of the style. I'm sure a XI player could confirm or deny.

I do, however, miss having more FF elements in the game.

Thats exactly what got me thinking as I remember hearing a while back that SE's next MMO was not going to be a Final Fantasy one. However I have just done a search on Rapture as that was the first thing SE had as a codename for the MMO and it seems they announced in August 2005 that they had already begun development on their next MMO codename Rapture. lets face it. Nobody pays attention to the story in XIV. Its all about grinding and making bank. Ive seen 1 summon so far and that was Odin at the r38 or 36 quest. Kool.

Tanaka has no clue how to make games any more. He spent 5 and a half years trying to figure out how to make the game as user unfriendly as possible to prevent RMT.

In all honesty I feel like this game is the complete opposite of FFXI but maybe that was the point.

True but they would have had to redo any story anyway to make it more Final Fantasy'ish, which would explain a complete lack of it, which is also strange as that is what Final Fantasy games are all about for the most part.
