I don't know what a toon is, but you certainly don't need to start a new character over this.
Considering you haven't progressed too far into the MSQ, the characters shouldn't be too removed from where you need them.

If you haven't already, there's a level 50 sidequest called "A Reoccurring Problem" given to you by Minfilia. Be sure to enter her office as it's not part of the Waking Sands map directly. She should have the quest if you haven't already picked it up. Completing this will give you new sidequests which unlocks the first three HM primal fights for you. Having those will let you progress the main scenario quest.
