Actually, Lorelei summed up perfectly. It has nothing to do with entitlement or epeen but the fact there is literally nothing in this game that hits hard enough to require constant healing. The current meta grew because you will inevitably stand around doing absolutely nothing even in Savage if you only wish to heal. Until that changes, healers will always be pressured to DPS because few people want to raid with someone who only partially contributes to the group.

Queuing into The Feast as White Mage seriously highlights these issues. The healing intensity can be immense and you only have so much time to anticipate potential damage given the nature of PvP. While I'm still learning how to handle everything, I absolutely love it despite not being a healer main. Unlike dungeons or raids, I have to heal and shield constantly. Status effect also become huge contributions to controlling and containing incoming damage-- an aspect sorely lacking in PvE. Admittedly, the lack of predictability may be difficult to properly emulate in raids but I'd love to have more of the healing intensity shifted over. I main DPS roles and actually want to heal whenever I switch over. Not just be a glorified DoT and Holy spammer.
